My 'low-mile' Acer 10x4x32 CD-RW drive has apparently had a coronary. I say low-mile because I'm really not a heavy user. I have just been using the drive to occasionally back-up data.

Anyway, I see that there are now 52x24x52 units and there's more brands than you can shake a stick at. I'm looking for an internal drive that'll work with Win. 98, preferably $80 or less. That narrows it down to a hundred or so. :p

Also, I've become accustomed to using Adaptec DirectCD but quite a few of the drives come with Nero. I fiddled with an older version of Nero about a year or so ago and didn't like it.

Recommendations?

^^

I agree with both things Kevin said...

Liteon drives are a really good bang for your buck, and you can get them for around $50 canadian, so it definitely fits your price range of being less then $80 us.

Nero is pretty good, fairly easy if you use the wizard, and still easy if you don't use the wizard.

OfficeMax has a MadDog 54 speed right now for 69.99...then there's a 30 dollar mail in rebate from OfficeMax and a 20 mail in rebate from MAd Dog. Total cost? $19.99. I bought one for my folks.

I love my teac. and definitely learn to use nero. it's the best burning software out there, without a doubt.

As recommend above.... Lite-on

I have put 300 cds thru my 52x24x52 in the last few, and love it.

Yamaha and plextor make the best burners bar none. Top notch quality and can be used continually without heating up.

Thanks folks!

I didn't see Lite-on at my local retailers. Go figure.

I did pick up a Memorex 52x24x52 drive that came bundled with Nero for $50...not bad. I also picked up 100 Memorex 48x CD-Rs for $20.

So far so good and the Nero software is better than I recall. Thanks for the suggestions. :)

I was going to suggest a Yamaha as well. Mine has sure taken a beating with no complaints. Good luck with your set-up! Ben
