charging system problem?

This has happened twice in the past two weeks. I get in my car and start and the scanmaster shows its charging 11 volts then it jumps back to 14 then its all over the place between 10 and 14 volts. But if i shut the car off and start it again it charges 13.5 to 14.1 and i have no problems from that point on. The battery is a year old and doesn't leak and i have no idea how old the alternator is. Any suggestions, because i'm just about to replace the batt and alt.

Just to double check it I'd check with a regular voltmeter just to verify.

checked according to voltmeter the alt is good and there is no draw on the system.
