I have a newly rebuilt bigger Hot air turbocharger. Can I convert it so that it will work on an 86-87 motor? Can I just change the compressor housing and reclock? Thanks
The answer is no, 84-85 turbo clocked or not is totally different and much smaller than an intercooled turbo. Even with bigger wheels the compressor housing is much smaller and will create much heat.

It will physically bolt up if you use the mounting ears off the 87 turbo. The compressor housing has a bigger outlet so you will have to run a correctly sized hose from turbo to intercooler. You will have to reclock the exhaust and intake sides. I run the 87 style turbos on my hotair so I've done the opposite of what you're doing a few times. Not sure how the wastegate will bolt up, I've been running an external for a while. I remember grinding the 87 wastegate mounting flange to fit but I don't think that will be a problem with the compressor reclocked.
Thanks for the reply. Found out that it's a TA49. Chopper @ Limit says that the compressor housings are quite similar. I may try to sell to a Hot air guy and buy a correct turbo for an 86-87. It is a fresh build with no run time. See Parts for Sale. Thanks
