Cost of repaint

Can separate body panels that have chipped or are beginning to check (crack) be finished separately or does the whole vehicle need to be repainted? If so what is the cost of a decent paint job if there is not rust, major dents etc. Need to factor the cost into some cars I see for sale that may have the original paint with issues.

Depends on color, black you may get by panel painting to make it look acceptable. Generally painting the whole car is the only way on most colors of that age. Just a sand and paint 4000 most though around 8 for quality job.

FYI I just spent $890.00 on
Dupont -- 1/2 gallon of paint,
One gallon of 2k primer, one gallon of clear, reducer, activator.
And that was for a 1/4 and door.

Yep.. domestic refinish products are a huge ripoff.
My bud uses Mipa products for finishes on hi $ hotrods, street machines...Much lower costs.
A German co w/ USA distribution.

The op's ?.... many repaints will be "higher than the quote", as paint hides many evils. A car u think is good, once stripped and blocked out.....
A strip, base/ clear and correcting the flaws, around here: $8-10K

If you want to to a proper full paint and do it right, it needs to be stripped to the metal... I usually strip the trim and gut the cars I send out for paint (to save on some labor.)
I let the shop do the prep and paint.
Search around. There's a few threads on this. Costs getting into the $10k and up range for a job well done with quality products.

Can it be done cheaper? Yes. Will it be as nice or last? No.
