i say 2nd degree murder. I've dragged on the street a half dozen times, and it's scary to think that i could have done what they did.

notice how the guy who crashed is facing 7 years while the guy who ran from the scene is facing 12 years... while I agreed with the murder charges I believe this is a good compromise and I believe justice is served here...

EDIT:

this bothers me -

Much of the trial focused on the knowledge the men had — or didn't have — about street racing fatalities. Waller and Calhoun both took the witness stand and insisted they were totally unaware that what they termed their hobby was deadly.....................

...........Both men had attended legal community races designed to lure muscle car enthusiasts away from the streets, but told jurors the events did not educate them about the dangers.

Thats such a load of BS... at those drags at qualcomm they are KNOWN for preaching it all night long... and they even found pamphlets in the guys cars about the dangers of street racing...

This trial has reinforced the fact that racing is to be done on a track. I am lucky that I never had any bad experiences drag racing on a street.

Oh yeah, don't run from the cops. They will catch you eventually.

My only complaint is last year in Ohio on July 4th weekend we had 8 highway deaths in one day. All of them were alchohol related. How come we can fill sports stadiums of dead accident victims that were directly related to drugs and or alchohol and we do not make a big deal of it? We let the drivers go and give them special driving privileages? Sorry to rant but this is what makes me mad. I am by no means saying what they did was correct. I personally beleive they know what they did was wrong and have to face the jury. I am only saying there is alot of press on this but the others seem to go unoticed. Sorry for the rant.

I have been complaining of the same thing. It seems street racing is much more "sensational" for the press, and they love to harp on it because it gets viewers and ratings. In Miami, there are a couple of spots out in the boone docks where there is no traffic or side roads where some racing takes place late at night. I do not feel that is the same as racing down a main city street. In Florida, Jeb Bush signed a law that street racing is a felony. I think circumstances should dictate the penalty, the amount of willfull recklessness and disregard for others. It is not the same racing down a city neighborhood as out in the middle of nowhere where there is no traffic and it's late at night. Overall, I agree that the convictions for manslaughter of the two in this thread is appropriate, as opposed to murder.
