i am currently getting ready to purchase new rims for my 81 regal and ive got a style in mind that id really like to purchase my only problem is fitment issues....ive currently got 15" oem rims with a 3.5"bs and the rims im looking at are 17"x8" with a 4" bs with a 245/45/17 tire going on them...will this work without modifications?? anyone out there currently running such a setup?

Well I've been shopping for rims this entire month, so I think I've got the whole backspacing/offset thing hammered pretty well into my brain. 8 inch wide wheels with a 4 inch backspacing pretty much means that you have zero offset (the centerline of the wheel is exactly where the mounting flange is). You should have no problem with that. Zero or Negative backspacing is what you want for a Regal.

The wheels you have now, OEM 7" wide with 3.5" BS, basically the same thing. 3.5 is dead center of 7, zero offset.

Going up from 7" wide to 8" wide, with the mounting flange still centered in the rim, you're basically getting a half inch closer to the frame on the inside, and a half inch closer to the fender lip on the outside.

245/45/17 will keep your overall size very close to the OEM 215/65/15. The overall circumference will actually be LESS on the 245/45/17. You should have absolutely no problem fitting these.

hope so becuz id hate to spend 1400 on this combo and be disappointed.

thanks for your insite.

Yeah, that's why I've been hesitant about buying my new tires and wheels.

Here's the handy tire calculator I use when I'm trying to pick the right size...

http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp

Check it out, but I think 245/45/17 is the closest you're going to get to the OEM size.

Width should be no problem since the GNX ran 8" rims with I think 255s, and plenty of guys around here run 275 and higher.

Yeah, you should have no problem with that. I'm looking at 18x9s right now, and I'm not expecting any problems, so I don't think you have to worry. :p

17x8 with a 4" backspace fit perfect. That is exactly what I run up front and I also use a 245/45 17 tire up front. No modifications are needed for that. If you want to see any pictures just let me know. For rears I run 17x9.5.

What wheels are those in your avatar with that huge lip?

Neverrrrmind I see it in your signature, I'm a bit tipsy haha.

kb if your running 17x9.5 in the rear what is your backspacing and tire size on those?? i may go with a slightly bigger tire if i dont have to modify anything.

Backspacing is 4.75" on the 17x9.5. I run Nitto 274/40 Drag Radials. I don't have any rubbing issues but I also don't put anyone in the back seat.

well i took the plunge today a spent 1450.00 on new tires and rims went with 17x8 centerline daggers w/ a 4" bs all the way around using riken raptor 245/45/17's. hopefully i dont have any issues with this setup and ill keep ya informed when they show up. thanks for everyone's help!!

They will fit. I was nervous when I ordered mine also because it is alot of money to spend, but after measuring and doing research they worked out perfect :D .

Not wanting to alarm you BUT -

When you get them, measure them - outter lip to outter lip - chances are they're 9" in overall width.

If you can get to a wheel/tire store, measure any rim in the store at random and check the measurement against the advertised width.

Reason being - I'm running 17 x 11's on all four corners of my mustang and the rims are 12" in overall width. I'm running 18x9.5 on the rear of the GN and the rims are 10.5" in overall width.

You are correct about the extra 1" but the reason being is for the center thickness. This formula is from Coddington wheels from. Hope it helps.

17x8" + 1" = 17x9" - 4.5"(backspace) = 4.5" - 1.75"(center thickness) = 2.75" lip
17x9.5" + 1" = 17x10.5" - 4.75"(backspace) = 5.75" - 1.75"(center thickness) = 4" lip
17x10" + 1" = 17x11" - 4.75"(backspace) = 6.25" - 1.75"(center thickness) = 4.5" lip
