We just traded for a rolling pile of scrap iron caprice, literally going to the salvage yard, bad tranny. It has a posi rear, are they 30 or 28 spline axles in 93. Gut feeling says 30 and therefore not worth the effort, has 200k miles. Can't find the spid label anywhere in it either.

thanks

If it's a 30 spline you can use the ring carrier in a G body diff and purchase stronger 30 spline axles.

Yeah I figured that was possible, but that takes the whole budget thing and throws it out the window. LOL

If you are looking for a 28 spline positraction carrier, look around salvage yards with 1971-77 GM intermediate/full size cars, along with Novas/Camaros.
Most if not all GM positractions from '89 and newer were the govenor/flyweight type and deffinately NOT what you want.
Good luck,

Kevin

of those choices, the most likely place to find a stock posi diff that works with 3.42 gears would be in a 77-79 Z/28 or Trans Am with a 4 speed and rear disk brakes. the odds are against finding one, but they are out there. the second best place to look would be a 9C1 Caprice from the mid to late 80's.. look in the actual run into the ground patrol car versions, since they got more of the "good stuff" than the detective cars. if you find one, make sure there is no play in the spider gears and cross pin, and be prepared to get a posi rebuild kit from GM to tighten it back up.

Yeah that's what goes through my head when thinking of JY posi carriers. Used up and need rebuilt anyway. I'm sure there's at least one in my local yard, in fact with little searching I found a 2 series posi already. BUT they want to sell me the whole rear end, and then to rebuild it, etc. Screw it I'll buy a new one. This car was here and parts were FREE so I was going to grab it if it's useful but since it aint, it's easier to DRIVE the car on the trailer than get a tractor and load it without rear axle parts.

Some of them are the clutch type. I know my brother's 95 GMC has the 8.5" with the clutch type posi in it. I've had it apart before. Now the 14 bolt SF 9.5" in my '94 Chevy has the flywheel type locker, so I'm not sure what went on when some of the trucks were built. But any posi after '89 should work, and it should be a 30 spline unit. 1988 was the change over year when they went from 28 to 30 spline and that rear was labeled the 8.625".
