downshifting manually?

I'm crusing at 55 mph in 4th gear with TC locked up. Lets say some ricer dude wants to play on the highway. Should I slow down a little to shift into 3rd gear or just stay at fourth gear? Is it even good to shift down to third gear when you are traveling at that mph?

when all is working right you shpuld be able to stab the gas and get a 4/3 or 4/3/2 downshift and start to see the rice a roni fade away in the rear view mirror.its ok to force a downshift with the lever but this may cause engine overspeeding and / or loss of traction.www.ckperformance.com

So I would be stabbing the gas and forcing the shift lever to 3rd gear at the same time?

Like Chris said, a properly functioning trans will do this with no manual assistance from the driver beyond using a rapid downward pressure on the go-pedal with the right foot.
