Hello im new here and i bought a 1987 Buick Regal Turbo T and i had a driveshaft question, my car currently
has a turbo400 trans if im hearing this staright from my buddy this is called a TH400 transmission. My question is i want to update the stock driveshaft thats in it, im not sure if its even orig or if its out of another vehicle, my question to you guys is the Grand National driveshaft the same as a regal t type, are they interchangeable?

I really want to get a dynotech driveshaft and i see they make one for the Grand National but nothing for the regal t type.

So my question is, the driveshaft for a grand national the same as a regal?

Also what transmission is in the Grand Nationals stock from the factory and is the yoke the same as a turbo 400 transmission?

Sorry for all the questions guys im new to these cars and gm's for that matter i moved over to the dark side, ive been a ford guy but just moved to gm and im loving it and these cars, i just want to get a better driveshaft since i will be racing this car at the drag strip alot and with a trans brake and lots of boost i dont think the stock steel shaft is going to be able to put up with the abuse.

Thanks guys and have a great day!

Well there is no difference with the grand national drive shaft and any of the other coupe g bodys other than the fact that the grand national one is 1 inch shorter due to rear end differences. So that being the case if you dont feel that your driveshaft currently in the car is sufficient then either buy a heavy duty one from a supporting vendor on here or have one built to your standards locally. These cars did not come with th400 they came with 200-4r and the drive shaft yolk is different being bigger in the th400

I knew they didnt come with a TH400 from the factory, i kinda wish it had a built 200-4r but the old owner who was a member on here put in a TH400 instead.

So your saying the rear ends in the Grand Nationals are diffrent than the regal t types? I was under the assumption that they were the same?

Is there any local vendor that sells an aluminum driveshaft for a regal t that is using a TH400 transmission?

Thank you so much for the info!

The drive shaft and rear end of the grand national and the t type are the same in theory they are the same car except the grand nationals only came in ALL black.

Call Denny's driveshaft. I'd get one custom made. You will have to take all the measurements of length, width/diam of u joints, etc, etc but it will be right.

Oh ok I understand I thought you were saying the grand national driveshaft was an inch shorter compared to the regals, you must have been refering to the other g body cars big reazon. I've got a local driveline shop that can prob make me a driveshaft but I'm sure its gonna cost more than a dynotech one, I'm wondering if I could get a dynotech one and just use the hardned yoke that goes into my transmission now, I need to contact the old owner of this car and see what he exactly did when he installed the turbo400.

Thanks for all the info guys I apperciate it, I'm just wondering how many guys on here that race their cars go with a diffrent driveshaft and how many people are still using the stock shaft, my car supposedly runs low 11s on the 1/4 and I think my best bet would be to upgrade the driveshaft.

You may be surprised about the cost of a DS locally. I can't remember off the top of my head the last local one I had for a lower performance car but it was pretty cheap. Depending on how powerful your car is, if you run slicks and a trans brake, etc it could be pretty reasonable. Get good u joints though. ;)

I will have to check locally then and see what they have to say, yea this car has a trans brake and slicks not sure what I'm going to launch the beast at psi wise but I wanna have some fun and get some good timeslips.

What u joints do mostt of the guys run around here? I have use solid spicers before and so have my buddies they seem to be a pretty good u joint for vehicles with decent power.

the non turbo car except for the 442 have a 1 inch longer driveshaft. The driveshaft in a regular regal is 1 inch longer than the t type or the grand national or husrt 442. But I would as others have suggested have one custom made for your situation. The nice thing about these cars is a lot of high performance stuff is pre made but something like a driveshaft I would have built for me.

Sounds good I will check locally we have a place called AA driveline a few cities over from me, hopefully they can make me a shaft for a reasonable price.
