I just ordered u-joints for my Buick. Could someone verify if the universal joint has a internal or external snap ring? Does it matter? I don't have the car by me at the time. I ordered external. I hope this is ok:confused:

Internal on the shaft I got in the garage. I didnt think gm ran external clips

Awesome, I initially ordered external clips from Randy's ring & Pinion. I just called them back and got the internal type. Thanks Chopped 39 for the quick response and expertise. Nice collection of cars you got. I like the ZR1 and especially the sleeper limited.

Yep, internal. But you may have to deal with the initial headache of melting out the factory nylon if they are the originals you are replacing.

Factory Nylon Phil's talking about below. Heat & squeeze method. Mmm, Gooey.

What method is best used to melt the plastic? Is a c-clamp necessary? Once its out, how does the u-joint go back in? Thanks.

You can use a map gas torch available at any hardware store. I always use a big hammer and 2 sockets, 1 that is alittle smaller that the u-joint cup to drive it out, and another larger to put underneath to hold the yoke up and catch the cup. Going back together is easy, slide it together and the internal clips hold it together. Make sure you put the clips on the rearend part of the u-joint too, I have seen people not do that.
