I am sure there are plenty of you in the workout mode. I could use some tips.

Since Jack Cottens party a few weeks ago & all that tempting food I topped out at 160 LBS on a 5.5 small frame that is too much. I feel like crap, sleep bad.

I have decided to start walking times a day - 1/2 hour each session. Afternoon & eves. once on treadmill & once on regular ground surface.

I am going to cut back on the carbs & try the ZONE or Atkins style diet. fish, tuna, small beef, green veggies, shakes.
Staying away from sugar stuff like juices, cereal, baked goods, pizza ( i love pizza), white breads.

Would some weight lifting duty help me drop the weight faster?
or should I not mix the 2 in the begining?

The use of weights will help you tone and then build your muscles. You should do the weights first and then do your walking, eventually running. If your not sure about a training routine pick up a Muscle and Fitness mag. It will help you get a weight routine started. They also have good sugestions for dieting. I work out with weights 5 days a week. I usually drink a protein shake after my workouts. Don't look for results right away, but give it 6 weeks and you'll be glad you started.

Start swimming. If you workout and swim you got it made. I have been swimming for years, it's a darn good exercise, only if it is an indoor pool. Goodluck Bud

I wouldn't try any of those carb diets. Just stick with the old fasioned way of eating the RIGHT foods. Lean meats, vegetables, whole grain breads. Stay away from stuff thats fried. Weights are an excellent way to shape up as mentioned above. A good, consistent (at least 3 times a week) weight training routine coupled with a better diet and some cardio, and you should be on your way within the next few months. Also, if you want to trim down, forget that fast food restaurants and soft drinks even exist. Drink water, tea, juice, or I guess diet cola drinks are okay, too.

if you do atkins, i will personally fly to your house and squarely kick you in the balls soo hard your kids will feel it!

LOL, now that's funny!:D

P.S. If you do it your breath will STINK!

So is the wifey on your butt? Had to buy new pants that fit? Starting to look like your mom? Try eating smaller portions and no fast food. Don't eat what the kids didn't finish at Micky Ds. Your schedule is why you don't sleep. Untill that changes you won't sleep better and feel rested.

OK - 2 small steps:

Drink 6 cups of green tea a day. If you fall behind you can brew 2 bags and count that as 2 cups.
Problem people have with green is improper brewing. Don't put boiling water on the bag. Let the water boil, wait one minute, then pour it on. Keeps it from getting bitter. Brew for only 2 minutes to start. And don't drink it on an empty stomach.

2 - apple cider vinegar. Not the Heinz crap. Head to gnc for the natural kind. Shake and take 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon 10 minutes prior to dinner with a mouthful of water. Don't drink anything else with meals. 30 min before and 30 after ('cept the green tea).

We have a woman at the hospital that my bro works at that has lost 2 dress sizes on this alone with no change to her diet/exercise habits at this point.

Some other steps:

Eliminate coffee. You'll do even better if you replace morning coffee with the green tea.

None of those pesky carbs for breakfast - starts an insulin response that is tough to overcome. Try having Rolando make you 3 egg whites (bring your own Arnold 'Natural' Bread or have them with no bread) and an apple.

Make sure you get, in ounces, half your body weight in water. IE, 200lbs, get 100 oz.

Later,

Here is what worked for me. I had to start losing weight because of high blood pressure and the fat content in my blood was thru the roof and I was only 27 at the time. First of all, don't eat anything 3 hours before going to bed, makes a huge difference. Before I started exercising I did this and lost 10 lbs just from that change. If you are already doing 2-30 minutes sessions of exercise per day, make one cardio (running, wlaking, jump rope, etc...) and make the other lifting. Lifting weights burns the fat better than cardio. Lifting helps speed up your metabolism so you body is even burning fat while you sleep.

Forget any specialized diets like Atkins. Just smart eating and exercise will make the difference you need. Problem with those diets is once you get one them if they work at all, once you stop you put the weight right back on. Just eat more frequent meals rather than 3 big meals. If you eat smaller portions your stomach will begin to shrink and you will require less food to be full and this is when you will see the biggest difference in how you feel.

Hope this all helps. it worked for me. i went from 230 lbs of fat to 220 lbs of muscle. The weight moved from my stomach to my arms, shoulders and chest.

ahhhhhh I should be good at this now...watch ya diet...STOP eatin crap.. I have been on diets all my life it seems.. Stay away from fast food and fried food.. I try an eat 4 times a day ( small snacks) ..I have an egg for breakfast.....then a small piece of choc cake around 10 am ...then lunch with a brownie bowl chaser around 2...then a ice cream sundae later around 10 pm...oh oh I am dreamin again:p
Or wait till ya get older an get sick...hey ya can loose 50#s in a month!!! EAT healthy!!!..only took me a gazillion years to figure it out. and you must stick to it. I do have a cravin for choc. I had 2 M&M's the other day when I had to drive a hr to visit my parents. Normaly I would have eatin the whole bag an stopped for more!!
CONTROL your diet...easier said than done

My wife has lost 30 lbs in the past 6 months on Weight Watchers. Now me, forget about it, 225 at 5'11". 160?? I wouldn't be complaining!! Can't quit pizza, it's my heroine I guess.

I am with you Mark. 5'11" and currently 228 lbs. I haven't weighed 160 lbs since I was 16 yrs old.

Like Curly, the cowboy in the movie _City Slickers_ said,...."Its just ONE thing".

Just one thing will keep my/your weight down....I just haven't figured it out yet.

I'm 5'9" and pushing 170 @ 54 yo. I was always trim, ate everything in huge quantities. Never gained weight. Now that I'm slowing down the weight is coming on. Orthopedic surgeon told me to stop running (back troubles) I weighed 150 at the time ten years ago. I never developed self control to maintain my weight, so, now its a total lifestyle change.

Protien shakes work for me, but they do not taste good for long periods of time. Walking exercises the largest muscle groups in your body. That is the easiest way to raise your metabolism (you can lose some weight that way, and, you will sleep better too).

If you ask 50 people about weight control, you'll get 50 different answers, some of them good advice and many not good at all.

In any family, its the cook that needs the training in low fat food preparation and portion size. If you figure out how to curb your appetite, write a book, everyone else does ;)

stay away from Atkins diet...the author suffered a heart attack b/c of his diet according to his heart specialist! HAHAHA...

Do Body for Life (www.bodyforlife.com) it works awesome and it builds up on the degree of workout and aerobic as yo ugo further into the program! best thing is, you eat (healthy ofcourse) 6 times a day, and that is heaven for someone like me who LOVES food! :) good luck...

Mark you bringing your wife to the Cruise Nights this year? :D

The internet caused me to gain about 10 lbs. Up to 160 now. ;)

Internet potato. Or is that potatoe?

Hey anyone giving up Pizza is a maroon! It is by far the best Italian health food. :)

I also thought most gearheads were weightlifting mutoids? :p

Gotta go p/o enough people in this post.

Damn, I'm no internet potato Salvage! Between work, the new house and making cold air kits I never stop. Getting about 5 hrs sleep a night for the past two months and it is catching up with me! Everything I eat just stays with me I guess.

The best book I've read about diet is the _Target Diet_. You can zero in on healthy diet and exercise, even fall off the "wagon" occasionally. A balance of very reasonable common sense and scientific tactics to get in control.
