Hey guys, I have a full 3 in all they was back exhaust with a dynomax Race Buillit muffeler. Well i have always liked the look of it coming out by the passernger side door, but right now that dynomax is sooo loud when you rev it up and let off it pops alot and i dont really like that to much i would like something loud but dosent pop alot anyone have a flowmaster 40 on these cars? what sounds good any off brand or what? Also any one run it out the side what dose it sound like. Anyone please imput on this. Thanks guys
Brian

Flowmasters are not good to use on these cars because of the way they are designed to work. If you are looking to spend some money, you could always put on an ATR Pitbull setup  , they sound great and i dont have any popping after i rev it up, nice deep mellow sound.

I'm not sure exactly what it is, but it is something with the way the exhaust or exhaust gas pulses, and that is what flowmasters are dependent on, and turbo car dont have that. I did a search and seen that googs tried to explain it to you already.

The basic concept of exhaust "tuning" it based on pulses in the exhaust system. It's kinda complicated, but basically, the flow coming out of the engine isnt at a constant rate. It comes out in pulses, or slugs of air, each time an exhaust valve opens. This causes pulses in the exhaust stream. Now when these are flowing in a tube, some interesting things happen. Essentially, when they hit restrictions (collectors, etc.) or when they reach the end/opening of a tube, there are low-pressure pulses/waves reflected back UP the tube (towards the engine). Now if you can tune the length of the tube and the type of restriction, you can time these refleected pulses to coincide with exhaust valve opening events. Essentially, if you get the length of the tube correct, at a certain RPM range, this low-pressure pulse will make its way back to the exhaust valve right as it (the valve) opens. That means this reflected low-pressure pulse can actually help evacuate more exhaust gas out of the cylinder, by essentiually sucking the hot exhaust gas out of the cylinder, leading to better exhaust flow. Unfortunately, a certain length of tube will only cause this beneficial effect in a relatively narrow RPM range, which is why long-tube headers and shortie headers will move torque and power peaks up and down along the RPM range. This same principle can be used to take advantage of these pulses in different ways. I can only imagine flowmasters work on this same basic principle, by using these pulses to essentially internally cancel out some of the increased backpressure/restriction placed on a system by adding a muffler. Now when you try and apply this concept to a turbo engine, you can see why it has little effect.. any pulses/pressure waves in the exhaust would be so disrupted and "chopped up" by travelling through the turbine housing/wheel that any "tuning" effects after the turbo would be kinda pointless, as the pulses wouldnt exist, or if they do, would be so weak as to be negligible. I'm sure this is an over simplification, and I'm sure there are those on this board that could do a MUCH better job of explaining it all (and I'm sure there are probably some things in this that are flat wrong, keep in mind this is info I'm trying to remember from my aero- and flow-dynamics classes at the AF Academy 4 years ago), but hopefully this will give some idea of the principles involved.

Great explanation!

I second the ATR Pitbulls. The mild steel have a nice V8 rumble. The stainless aren't quite as deep, just a little quieter, but for whatever reason seem to let a little more of the turbine whistle out of the exhaust which to me sounds good.

Alright cool 84 would you happen to know were i could get one just the muffeler? Thanks for the help everyone

I've heard ATR is out of business. Sorry, didn't think about that when I posted that last one. I'm sure some vendors still have a stock.

Has a list of vendors.

ive called magnaflow (they only make stainlees steel exhaust) and they don't have exhaust systems for these cars 84-87. they think there is not a big market for them, but atr is out of bisness so we should have a list to give to them so they can make this.

maby in the summer i might travel the 2700 miles to cali to have them make an exhaust for my 87 engine???? but as of now they dont have measurements of these cars

flowmaster made a exhaust system for the 86/87, and they probably still sell it. I saw it in the summit catolog, and man that was the worst exhaust system I bought ,it was so restricrive all my headers and up pipes would turn cherry red . so that didnt last long, I took that off and put on a full atr ss exhaust system headers and all.... and I likes a lot :)
.

Wow i dident know that. Well i just want a ATR Pitbull muffeler no piping would you happen to know were i could get one at? Thanks

a few years ago we bought some mufflers from a parts store, and i cant remeber which one, but they were called pit bull mufflers. we put them on a v8 s-10 mini truck. I'm not sure if that was related to atr. try surfing the net
for something.

My 3" ss atr mufflers, I can see right through them, clear as day, if that helps you, and they were a compact size. fit 13" long 4.5" thick 7" wide abouts

Do a google search on ATR pit bull mufflers.
Alot of the import suppliers have ATR systems.
Might be able to just buy a muffler.

Dynomax ultra flow!!! I have a 3 inch set up on my car and it sounds great with no drown. Straight thru design so it makes plenty of power.
