I decided to test my alarm the other day. It used to work and I dont know WTF happened. I rolled my drivers side window down, turned my ignition off, locked the doors with the power lock switch, and shut the door. The security light turned off. I waited maybe 30 seconds or a minute, and reached in and unlocked my door from the switch, then opened it from the outside, and the alarm didnt go off. I tried it different ways, and it seems like it would be super easy to steal this thing. I havent changed anything related to wiring, so what happened? The security light is on when my ignition is on. Turn the key off, the light goes off. Is the light supposed to be on when the door is closed?
Am I just testing it wrong? I wouldnt think so, cause just like a thief could do, I reached in through the window, unlocked the car, got in and fired the car up. No alarm. WTF? Im wondering if some scumbag in my hood was trying to set my car up for an easy theft one of the times I had it parked in the driveway. I dont live in the greatest neighborhood. People tagging on my sidewalk, people stopping in their cars in front of my house for a few seconds and then taking off once I walk outside. Startin to get spooked here!

My factory alarm works when it feels like it too... I didn't even know I had one till one of my installers closed or opened a door and the car wasn't happy and started honking like mad and killed the ignition.

Now I have a quick battery disconnect for when she's cranky! ;) Probably would help dissuade stupid people from messing with the car if there's no juice...

My 2nd GN had the factory alarm. I hated it. Talk about problematic. There's one undesirable option for sure. I will never buy another TR with it.

Let's see if i remember......

1. Car running, Light off
2. Turn off ignition and open door , Light flashes
3. Lock w/ switch, Light on steady
4. Shut door, Light goes off.
5. Open door with anything but key, HONK!

of course I have some kind of short in my door switch that blows the fuse to most interior stuff so I can't confirm any of this. Hope it helps.

If you are using the power lock switch, I think you are turning off the alarm. I think you need to unlock it with the manual know by the window. Another way to test it is to close the door far enough to turn off the dome light but not latch the door, wait for the security light to turn off and open the door. I discovered this method several years ago after waiting for traffic to pass after parallel parking on a busy street.

My alarm been unplugged for several years now, after a couple times of suddenly going off unexpectedly at 3am in the rain while sitting in the driveway. I think I have a faulty tamper switch behind the door lock that is causing the problem.

The only problem I had was years ago where the alarm suddenly started going off for no apparent reason...

After a little investigating, I found that when the car was assembled, the alarm wire was pinched under the trunk latch assy. It finally, after 14-15 years, made an intermittent connection to ground. I loosened the bolts, pulled the wire out, and taped it up. Been fine ever sense.

I feel it is one of the more reliable and unobtrusive Alarm setups... Little or no impact on the daily use of the car, no late night false alarms, and yes, it has even run off a potential thief before.

Maybe i've just been lucky the system has never failed for me, but I have no complaints. The design covers basics- Manually pulling up on the lock button and opening the door, or pulling the lock cyl. from the doors/trunk triggers the alarm. The electric lock switch DOES disable the alarm IF it has not been set off. To test, simply roll the window down, arm the alarm, and close the door- Then pull up on the lock button and open the door. It will go off if it is working properly.
