I believe and intercooler is a radiator like aparatus staitioned primarily towards the front of a vehicle, with the intention of being charged with air to cool, compress and discharge via the intake of the vehicle. This part is a bolt on for those who do not have one, and can be up-graded for those who already have one.
ALKY, and other chemical agents such as NOS, METH, and water, are not Intercoolers. They are chemical coolers. They do, indeed lower the charge temperature, however, they are not air. They are fuel, which, inturn, helps to burn the primary fuel at a lower temp, causing better burn, less knock, and better performance.
If ALky is an intercooler, what do you call a 1987 GN with a stretch intercooler and alky? Is it an stretch intercooled, chemical intercooled GN?
I dont think Razor or Steve will boast that slogan on their websites....
Alky is a chemical air compressor. An intercooler is a fabricated mechanical air compressor. There are huge differences, and they cannot be compared with regards to their physical characteristics. While they serve the same function, a hot air car is called a hot air car becuase it does not have a radiator like aparatus in the front of it.
By running 110 octane fuel, are you intercooling your car? I would think I am just gassing up, am I not? But according to your statements, if it is a chemical that acts as an air charge cooler or burn agent, it is an intercooler....So all those funny car guys, or the pro-stock guys who run N/A v-8's have intercoolers? they arent even turbocharged....
but those cars are entirely different cars from a turbo car. Comparing apples to oranges here.
lets try this a different way--- 86-87 GN's are red apples, and 84-85 gn's and Rivs are green apples. they are the same shape, they are the same platform, but truely, different tastes and flavors.
Put an IC on a hot air, it is not a hot air. Put alky on the car, and you are adding a fuel agent, not a fabricated metal IC. Alky burns, and once you run out of alky, you have to refill.....Do you swap your IC evertime you race?
Cal Harline is a genious for running No IC so fast. he is the fastest hot air with the 86-87 set-up.
Lee Thompson is the fastest Hot air with a HOT AIR set-up. red apples, and green apples dude....they are still apples, just different flavors.
so, lets drop the argument of IC and Alky, and lets find out what timeslips we have to credit those cars that do not have the metal radiator like aparatus in the front or side, or rear of the cars that we (or I) lable as an intercooler. For crying out loud, all of you who call names and retaliate with snyde remarks, please, go to a different forum. I have been here for a while, and I dont want to leave becaue I cant have an educated discussion with people without being rudely called names, or treated like a child.
I graduate college in 5 weeks, and I will be damned if I have to degrade myself just to have a conversation with biggots and infants about what mods qualify and what mods dont for my hot air...
I will have alky in my car, but I will not have a radiator full of air shooting into my intake. I will run a stock intake, and a stock block, and a stock location turbocharger, shooting "hot Air" into the intake before the alky is injected, making my car a HOT AIR. If I run Low 11's, then i will call myself ONE of the fastest hot airs. I know I will not be the fastest hot air, but IF i can run faster than one 1987 GN, modded or not, then I will have accomplished MY goals, and be satisfied with my accomplishments.
I pride myself in the knowledge I have gained off of these boards, and from the tech forums on other boards, and again, I will be damned if I have to read childish banter, like the multiple posts above, and tolerate it. People from the outside looking in would feel childish reading these posts, and react in the same manner as I am now... Disgusted, annoyed, and plain disheartened to read any further.
I think we owe it to the people like Jamie Foster-Wolcott and Lee Thompson, and anyone else who has gone the distance, furthering EVERYONE's knowledge in the potential of the 84-85 turbo buicks, and act a little, nay, A LOT more professional when referring to any of those people.
When mentioning Cal Hartline, you had best be prepared to apologize after associating his good name with such an infantile, semantic discussion.
My regards to all of you who read this entire post, I apologize, but I get sick of feeling ignorant after reading such posts, and not standing up and calling out those who slander the reputations people have worked decades on building up.
Shame on those who have, and an apology is more than appropriate for denouncing accomplishments, especially when they are not involved with the discussion at hand.
Good day, and better posts are in order.
