Well i finally got the trans back with the new multi-disk vigilante. Got the new external flexplate installed along with the new radiator and trans lines. Monday we'll install the trans and converter and hopefully get the car running the way it should. My trans guy told me that the pump kit was not necessary as he rebuilt the trans with a few mods that should take care of what the pump kit is for. Also gonna leave the new trans cooler fitting off that most people seem to think isn't a good idea. So i guess we'll see how everthing works and keep your fingers crossed that no new problems crop up and i can finally run the car the way she is supposed to be ran.

i'll keep you guys posted :D

What trans cooler fitting? Did you go to braided lined or stay w/ solid? I just did a set of braided on mine and will be installing the trans next week. I am also switching from Redline synthetic ATF to regular type F tranny fluid, for harder shifts. Any thoughs on what your going to use?

precision included a different trans line fitting to replace the upper one on the trans that most say not to use....so i'll see how it works without changing it. i stayed with stock hard lines and plan on using good old GM fluid for now. if everything works then i'll switch to the type f in the spring.

Precision includes an upper fitting with a restriction to increase pressure in the trans. Most people think it's a bad idea. My trans guy didn't do any of the three things (restrictor, pump tube kit and remove check ball from input shaft) 'required' of Precision and my 5-disk locked up just fine. For a while.....

After about 6-8 months the Vigilante started slipping at WOT. Lockups became sloppy. I took the trans back to the trans guy and sent the converter to Precision. Both checked out fine. Against his advice, I had the trans guy install the pump tube kit and remove the check ball from the input shaft. I did NOT install the restrictor. Put it all back together and there is some kind of pressure problem that is causing a very sloppy 2-3 shift and 3rd gear slips really bad. Lock-ups are rock solid as they were before it started slipping, though.

Trans is back out on the garage floor at the moment. I'm going with a different transmission from the same trans guy: no pump tube kit; no restrictor; checkball in place.

Guys

I don't know what you have going on or what kinds of problems you may have BUT, I have had a 5 disc ever since they came out. I run the restrictor fitting, remove the check ball capsule in the end of input shaft and also use the lockup tube. My trans runs @ 270 psi line perssure and I have had my eng. out more times than I like to admit. Never any thrust bearing problems or lockup or shift quality problems.

at this point in time i just want to get my car back running. it's been in the shop for three weeks now waiting on the tranny to get done so i can get it home and store it for the winter. there is alot of info out there that is sometimes contradictory and confusing but my trans guy seems to know what he is talking about and builds some of the best 200's of all kinds so i'll give him the benfit of the doubt right now. i just wish things were a little more straight forward when it comes to these things.

otherwise i'll stick a 400 in there and call it a day lol :p

I don't know what I have going on or what kinds of problems I have either - I wish I did. The transmission and converter haven't been right since like 2004. There have only been brief windows of time when both the transmission AND the converter work at the same time. This is with multiple converters and multiple transmissions.

My thing with the pump kit, restrictor and check ball is this: if the converter will work fine without it (and it will) then why do it? If I have lockup trouble this time I'll probably just set the car on fire. I'm done removing and reinstalling transmissions.

well everything is in.........and of course it's not the way it should be. i adjusted the tv cable twice and now it shifts pretty good at part throttle but still hangs up at WOT. i think the tv plunger might be sticky so maybe it needs some break-in or something. i'm gonna try a pressure gauge to make sure eveything is right othertwise we might need to start with a fresh valve body....or a 400.

anyone have any ideas?

at least i could get it home now

the lockup appears to be great. as soon as that thing flashes around 2800-3000 the tires lite up and it steamrolls to shift point.....it just gets hungup around there instead of being crisp. but at part throttle it runs pretty decent so far.

well i drove her around for a little bit more tonight and it seems to be getting better. it's starting to shift the way it's supposed to now but still a little skip here and there. i wonder if the tv valve is starting to get less sticky the more i drive it or maybe the converter is breaking in. i will try to get some short highway runs if it's nice in the next few days and maybe get some powerlogger scans.

So what's happening? It's winding up to too high of an RPM before it shifts? If so, which shifts (1-2, 2-3, 3-4)?

When my brother first got his trans back from a rebuild he swore it wouldn't shift into 2nd at WOT. I couldn't get it to duplicate it, but it would rev very high before going to 2nd at WOT. It's fine now, and is fine at the track and around town so he's quit worrying about it.

what happens is that at a 30 mph roll if you mash the throttle, sometimes it revs up to about 5500 and sort of searches for the shift instead of just hitting it, but changes gears if you slightly let off the gas. i'm not sure if that's the 2-3 or the 3-4. i tried a dead stop brake boost to about 8lbs last night and she shifted right thru 1-2 it just like you'd expect it to, so maybe it just needs broken in a little.

gonna hook up a pressure gauge and double check the pressures friday
