OK guys, maybe I can get an answer on this one. The manual says to "push in on output shaft until white line disappears". What is this accomplishing and how can I do it without the special tool?
How else can I tell what position to put the output shaft in before checking end play?
Thanks for your help.

check

This is the way I check input shaft end play.
Set up dial indicator
Pull up on shaft until it stop (easy force)
0 indicator
Pull up with greater force
Read dial
This is your end play.
This is the way my Buick manual calls for--hope this is right.

this is how I did it

Assemble forward clutch into direct clutch, lining teeth from input drum into direct clutch drum(indicator mark from disassembly). Install center support and bolt in place. Stand trans on end of output shaft. Install dial indicator on spline tip of forward clutch shaft and "0". Check front unit end play by pulling up on forward clutch shaft and read dial indicator( I use a small pair of vise grips on the spline end to pull it up. They don't need to be SUPER tight (spline damage) just enough to pick it up). Front unit end play should be .022-.051" (I set at .026- .030"). If not within specifications,(this is the fun part...) you have to tear the main drive all the way down to the output shaft and change the front selective washer.

It is just as I suspected! Everyone builds his tranny a different way! I assembled my output shaft assembly and set the clearance on the bench, then tore it down and installed it in the case. I used a method similar to Lee's to check overdrive endplay.
I bolted in the pump without gasket or o-ring and checked the clearance. I installed a new thrustwasher between the overdrive unit and the stator which was closest to making the measured
clearance .000". When I put the pump gasket in place, I gained the thickness of the gasket for clearance (about .013"?). I also
noticed that my ouput shaft was not hanging off center, either.
