Front Coil Spring Install

I have been trying to install the front passenger side spring with no success. I am using an internal spring compressor. Relaxed the spring is 15 inches long. I have compressed it to about 12 inches and can't get it in. I think I need another inch more compressed but it's making me very nervous about it all exploding in my face. Any thoughts?
