Fellas,

I need some help! A good friend of mine bought a 1986 buick T-type and were having a bit of a problem getting it running. The guy he bought it from stated that it died on him at a redlight and hasnt run since. He then went on and stated that he replaced the fuel pump and wired it direct..(not good)
We crawled up under this puppy last night checking on the work that he claimed he had done. We did narrow it down to under the hood.
It is getting fuel to the regulator and through it.... we put a fuel pressure gauge on it and it is reading zero. you can hear the fuel bypassing around to the other side and back to the gas tank... I was hoping one of you guys might have run into this problem and could tell us what is making it bypass route back to the fuel tank.
Very frustrating!
We managed to get it to fire up by squirting gas in the throttle body.
All replies greatly appreciated.

FP??

If you have fuel at the rail and the gauge reads zero, I'd have to ask:
Did you take the schraeder valve out of the rail before you put the gauge on??
Does the fuel pump time out when you turn the key to on? If the pump is wired "direct", then it should run all the time. Does it??
Check to see if there is voltage at the pump when you go to key on..
I doubt there would be zero psi if there's fuel to the rail, even if the reg is blown.. pull the vac line off the reg and turn on the pump.. fuel there?? If so, the diaphram in the reg is fubar...

HTH,

Thanks

Appreciate the help, while I was out of town they apparently got the problem fixed. Doesn tmake much since with them telling me the oil sending unit had a short in it causing the problems I described above.
But oh well, Thank you for your help.

OIL SENDER??

The oil sender unit also is a switch that will start the fuel pump, should the relay fail. It operates when the engine is cranked and the oil pressure rises to somewhere in the 4 psi area. That way you can still drive the car with the relay fried...

Glad you got it fixed!

:D ;) ;)

thanks

Yeah, that explains a bit more. I am not as mechanically inclined as my other friends. Just wanted to help them out.:)
One has an 87 Buick GN and then the other has the troublesome 86 T-Type.
I'm sure we are going to run across more problems and end up needing help with. Buddy informed me tonight that he wanted to pull the engine from the T-Type due to it smoking a bit a go completely through it........ Looks like nothing but good times for us in the near future.
