Can your fuel pump just gradually go bad? My 84 pops and cracks and I have to keep pumping the gas to keep it going. It seems to have pressure and will start on its own but dies just after it starts if I don't keep feathering the gas. It seems as if it isn't getting enough fuel or it just comes in spirts. It also backfires alot while I feather the gas. The odd part is that it smooths out and throttles up quickly if I floor it but will die when I let off of it. It isn't throwing any codes either.

You don't have any vacuum leaks?? I would try changing the fuel filter first.-Nick

I checked the fuel filter and its practicaly new, easy to blow through. I haven't been able to find any vacuum leaks yet. Is there a common area that they leak?

It doesn't really sound like a fuel problem to me. Borrow or buy a fuel pressure gauge to find out for sure. Maybe the kid tried to adjust the timeing, and turned the cam sensor a bit. Looks like you should start with a full tune up to find out what has and has not been messed with. Things like TPS, or the maf, plug wires, plugs. later....Danny

It did one thing funny today when I did get it started. It showed an ses light but when I checked for code it was code 12 which means there is no code right? Anyway I replaced plugs and wires and checked fuel filter so all of that is good. I thought it may be the cam sensor but I have turned it in 1/16" turns all the way around trying to start it at each stop but with no luck. I could start it in a couple different places but it would never run on its own. I just today started trying to adjust the tps. I guess I just need to buy a scan tool. I just hate to spend alot of money when it will probably be a simple $2.00 part or something slightly out of adjustment.
