Is it common for our gas tanks to develope leaks? After taking the car to the track last week, I noticed the gas tank was leaking pretty bad the next day. Its to the point where i have to air out the garage atleast 2 times a day. It appears to be coming from above the strap on the drivers side. I havent had time to drop the tank yet, but will very soon. Anyone else have this problem?
If it's something major and has to be replaced, does GM still have new ones available?, if so how much?
Thanks...

Have you put a pump in it lately? Done any work back there? I had my car leak fuel and smell real bad due to the crappy oring that came with the walbro pump.

I just bought this car and it was installed by the prevous owner. I noticed that the 2 rear tabs was locked also but he missed the front one towards the backseat.

Pulled it down, put in a stock Oring from GM and made sure the tabs was correct and all is well now.

Good luck

Sounds like an inexpensive fix is what you have there. If it was leaking from the bottom you would have a problem.

Wow, what a great idea for a tech article in the Technical Info section of the GNTTYPE website

Shirley this is the first time it has ever happened to a turbo regal...

I had the same problem. It seemed that the padding between the sprap and the tank moved, allowing the strap to rub a hole in the tank. I went and got a new one from NAPA, very nice product IMO (I'm not sure but I think NAPA gets the tank from a place mentioned in one of the threads here, you'll have to do a search, so it may be cheaper to go directly to them). Make sure you get the one for the TR's since it has the correct baffles in it. Good Luck.;)

Virgin87T. How much did you pay for the tank? I droped it today and found 3 huge patches. Obviously the previous owner had some type of problem with it. I just want to replace it with a new one and avoid any future problems.
Thanks...

My first leak was where the filler neck meets the tank. I just bought a new tank. When and if this one developes a leak it's JB WELD. Dose'nt every have a couple of tubes of that?

Gas tank leaking!

I had the same problem, but my problem was on the drivers side under the padded strap. Seems moisture gets trapped under this pad and causes the tank to corrode. I got some liquid steel and put that on it and then painted it. Problem is now been fixed for over a year now. If you don't paint it, the problem will come back. I found that out the hard way and had to do the job twice.

I had the same problem with the original tank. Seems it's a design flaw. If you noticed, the front bolt on the driverside strap hits the frame when you tighten it up,, it's because of the "point" on the bolt,, sooo the strap doesn't really tighen all the way and allows dirt and dampness to get in there. This eventually rusts/wears holes in the tank. I used a couple washers on the bolt to get a little more tightness on the strap.

Had the filler neck problem on my GN also at about 10,000 miles. JB weld fixed it up fine!

That is a VERY common problem here in NJ and other states that have snow/salt. The water/sand/crap gets stuck under the rubber insulator for the strap and rots the tank.

I bought a Spectra Premuim tank, and despite people on here and gnttype claiming its not baffled properly, have never had a problem with fuel slosh/starvation. I will mention I dont hammer the car with less than 1/2 tank in it, so maybe thats why I dont have any problems.

A little different situation

I had a gas leak about 3 months ago, I traced it to the top side of the tank. Turns out it was one of the rubber hoses going from the top of the tank to the metal fuel lines which run the length of the car. It had just split open. Dropping the tank wasn't too terribly bad. I went by my local hose and fitting store and just got enough to do all the hoses while I had them off. FYI there is a difference between fuel line hose and fuel injection fuel hose. Only someone who knows thier stuff would probably be able to tell you about differences. Be sure you ask. - BB:)

I've got a cheesy $150 aftermarket tank and neck on salvageV6 the WE4.

Have a low fuel light that comes on a lot too. ;)

Baffling is way overrated in MHO.

Never had a problem with my car with starvation on the street.

GN leaks now with over 16 gallons in it.

Gotta fix that someday...

Epoxy patching didn't work on salvageV6 but the holes were in the lower corner on that car.
