I'm getting ready to replace my pan gasket with Kirban's cork gasket. What type gasket sealer do I use or do I use any at all? Silly question I know, I just don't want to do this twice....Thanks in advance for the advice.

Personally, I would use a REAL LIGHT coating of some high temp silicone.
It won't hurt anything. Just make sure the surfaces are clean and torque the bolts evenly. Do not overtorque these bolts or the gasket may "squeeze out". The silicone will also help hold it in place while you are putting it together. Again, this is "personally".

I just put some weatherstrip adhesive on the pan. I use very little. Just enough to just hold the gasket to the pan. Let it sit up until it is gasket is attached to the pan. I don't use anything else. If you have to pull down the pan in the future, usually the gasket will come with the pan, complete, and you may not have to again replace the gasket.

Red,

Thanks, that is exactly what I'm going to do. I have used weather strip adhesive on valvecover gaskets before with great results. Will I have to remove the crossover pipe to get the oil pan off?

no just turn the crank to clear the counter weight. might have to take off the converter cover though,

Thanks guys, my adventure will start tomorrow or Monday morning....This Kirban cork gasket looks like the ticket....fantastic quality. Have a great 4th!

Hi,
I replaced my rear main seal with a split lip neoprene item, and used felpro stock gasket for the pan. The result was a leak around the starter area of the pan rail. Admittedly, I am running Synthetic oil, as so many of us are. I had no problems for about 8 months, then the leaks started. I think the synthetic may have been an issue, but it would take lab testing to verify this. Anyway, keeping the oil level lower seems to slow the leak. These are my experiences. What happens in your field may be different. Good luck!

senthetic oil is thinner oil it finds all the leaks. i use 10w 30 gtx oil in my gn and havent had any leaks in 4,000 miles so far

Thanks for the responses, I just replaced the pan gasket this afternoon in about 3.5 hours (I wasn't rushed so I took my time). The job wasn't tough at all, just time consuming. I had to pull the exhaust crossover pipe (that took the most time) and rotated the crank an 1/8 of a turn to get the pan out, other than that it was pretty easy. I would say it took longer to remove the cross over pipe than to remove the entire oil pan. I used a little weather strip adhesive to stick the gasket to the pan. The previous gasket was leaking at the rear, it had been over tightened (two of the rear pan bolts were soaked with oil). Still doesn't look like the rear main is leaking, if it was you would think that the flex plate would be oil soaked, mine was not. My car would leak just sitting. I also used a little bit of anti-sieze on the exhaust cross-over bolts, so I could easily remove them in the future.

Thanks again for all of the help.....Aaron
