What was the problem with the exhaust valve guides when the heads were first introduced on the market?

I have searched and read about some saying it was the fit of the guides being loose and others saying that it was also the material the guides were made of.

I have also read that champion is now using different guides then they first used and the newer ones are better, what are they using now?

Thanks in advance

My GN1's were installed in 2003 and caused my car to smoke at idle. The heads were then pulled off the car and the exhaust guides were measured by the engine builder and they all were out of spec, sloppy and loose. He installed new guides and we never had any smoking issues since. I don't know how it is at Champion today, but back then, I guess the customer was responsible for checking Champions work. Paul

John your car still smoking? Mine does too only on start up.

From the research I've done it seems to be the sizing of the guides more than the material.

I have a friend that had the same problem and when he put new champion irons on the car it quit smoking. But yours are aluminum.

Sell yours and buy a set of new ones, lol:eek:

later,
Jason

paul,

Did you use the same type of steel guides and bronze liners that were used originally but setup with tighter specs?

Who made them,or did you get the replacements from champion?

Thanks for the info

i have found that if you have aluimn. GN1's Champion sells the only guides that fit properly.. the next closest guide i found that came close to fitting was from a BBC brodix head

Phil,

So, it is standard that when you order exhaust guides from them you receive steel guides and k-line bronze liners.

I remember in my other thread you mentioning that about the brodix head.

Thanks

thats how mine came from Champion.. the brodix head guides were just tad shorter and i was afraid to use them
