I'm goin to see a used tranny, need to figure out if it in fact a brf code trans. do I just check the tag on the back for a BR? Or should I check that, and also pull the pan off and inspect the valve body? It is supposed to have pink paint on it, and say BR also, right?

My 86 trans had white paint with BR on it
Blue tag on the out side with BRF

87 had a yellow tag with BRF

with a servo cover #8635694

Make sure the valve body is in fact marked with the ink as a brf. If not, its another story. Mark :D

if no ink marks as they do washed off some times, check for two pressure switches.

Do you mean the electric things on the valve body!?

Furthermore, take a look at what's stamped on the ends of the aluminum throttle valve sleeves.

These sleeves are shown in the bottom half of this illustration.

Starting with the 2-3 TV sleeve, closest to the manual valve, it's stamped '21' on a BR and '19' on a BQ. The next is the 1-2 TV sleeve. It's stamped '15' on both BR and BQ valve bodies.

The 3-4 sleeve will be stamped 'F' on the BR & BQ units.

The Monte SS valve body, which is similar to the BR & BQ Buick units are stamped:

2-3: '9'
1-2: '15'
3-4: 'K'
