Going into the Air Force

If my memory serves me right, Bootstrap requires a 2 for 1 agreement. Meaning, for every 1 year your in the program you owe Uncle Sam 2 years after your commissioned, and I believe this is on top of your original enlistment. I also thought about this program and actually knew a girl in my squadron that went into it....seemed to like it. If I could do it over I would have got my college degree right out of HS and went in commissioned. Unfortunately at the time I had a real kick ass academic counselor that told me (17 years old) that I didn't have the aptitude for college and that the military was a better way to go...nice thing to tell a kid looking for direction! I attempted college numerous times while in, but my ASFC kept me TDY so much it was a waste of time to enroll. After discharge my level of maturity and attitude was such that I used my GI Bill to attend a junior college and earn a AA degree in Criminal Justice then went on to get a BA in Management & HR then an MBA just for S&G's....well kind of, actually it was nice to rub that title in the face of the aforementioned counselor who is still in the position of breaking kids down. Funny thing is I now have a higher level of education than he Crazy how things work out!

Like I said before,you will be surrounded by pansies,don't believe the hype.Be a man,reach down and grab ahold and you will go as far as you want to go.

Hopefully,one day you'll be a bird colonel up for retirement and think "damn that a-hole jarhead on the tubo board was right..."

Listen to the old Col. Get your job locked up before you go and look in to the Boot Strap program. Its work and sometimes its hard but I have never regretted the 22 years I spent doing something that I enjoyed.

I forgot to mention:

When I was going to college my Air Force supervision experience got me into General Motors for my summer jobs. I worked at Delco Products and Tonawanda Engine Plant for my last two summers in school. Having military experience gave me a leg up on your standard college kid. That was what the HR manager told me. "So I got that goin' for me"
