I think next year is the year for a bigger turbo (maybe the size of a te62, te45 or something like that). :D I have an old te34 turbo that the previous owner had on the car before the 44. I was wondering if it can be rebuilt and upgraded to a larger turbo. I was also wondering if that is even worth it or I should just sell it and use the money towards a newer turbo. I am on a budget and will be saving up over the course of the year so I'm gathering ideas/opinions now. Stock bottom end, mods listed in sig....

rebuilding the te34

As long as the te34 doesn't have any damage to the compressor or turbine wheels, it can easily be rebuilt. The most basic rebuild kits have bearings, snap rings, and thrust spacer (maybe some hardware, fittings, and o-ring). And there are complete overhaul kits as well. Take a look at the turbo tech articles on the gnttype.org site. This will get you started. Turbocharger

I did a master kit on my stock '87 Garrett unit 15 years ago. It took part of a day because I media blasted the housings, etc. with walnut shell and applied high temp coating to the turbine side stuff and clear-coated the compressor side stuff.

I would suggest you look at a few sources for the rebuild kit costs - Limit Engineering, Precision Turbo & Engine, and your local diesel truck engine shop. I had gotten mine from the local diesel shop when I did it. I would think all the places will review options and costs with you and offer their $0.02.

sorry if I wasn't clear, I'm a little hung over.;) I don't want to rebuild the 34 to 34 specs I was wondering if I can have it rebuilt to a larger size or if it would just be better to sell it or if it can be used for a core charge. I'm looking to upgrade within the next year.

Ok, in that case, I would give a call to John Craig at Limit. I know the hot air guys were having their OEM turbo's compressor housing machined to accept a larger compressor wheel when Limit did the rebuild. There are not a lot of options for the hot air guys. Maybe put a link in the hot air section to get their attention? Then give a call to Limit to see what can be done. Hope this helps.
