just got my drivers side header off and welded.

now im woried about puting it back on.

i noticed long bolts and short bolts. which ones go where?

also, is there any thing i need to use on the mateing surfaces of header to head? what if the last owner of my car used some kind of compound in the aria and the surface of the head is not smooth?

also, what tool can i use to get these bolts in fast? do i need extra long sockets? would that make it easyer on me?

do i need to torque these bolts down to a certain spec? or just until they are tight?

any help is much apreciated!

thanks alot!

Long bolts go in the "tubes", short bolts go on the "flats"

Use a sanding block or a sharpening stone to get both surfaces clean and flat. I start tightening in the middle and work outward crossing over like you would a wheel.

The torque is 37 lbft of torque, which is "pretty tight", but not "very tight".

You'll need a long socket to use a torque wrench, but you should be able to spin them most of the way in by hand.

You'll probably also find that some of the bolts on the passenger side rear, don't have enough clearance for a socket/ torque wrench to fit in.

So either "guesstimate" with a box wrench, or use a "torque adapter". This is basically a special short 2" long box wrench, where the other end has a 3/8 drive for the torque wrench to attach to, and the whole thing acts as a 2" extension to the torque wrench. Torque values will be about 5-10% higher than the wrench indicates, because of the longer "lever arm". Adjust accordingly.
