I was driving down the highway today on cruise control, in OD clutch locked, at 65 when there was a momentary stumble. Couldn't tell if the engine had shut down for a fraction of a second or if it was something else. It was something else.

When I stopped the car wouldn't move. It was like it was in neutral. I put the car in D and it seemed fine. At 65 I shifted to OD, there was a momentary flare and then it upshifted and seemed normal. Now the car will only move in D and the 2-3 upshift is prolonged. Shifting to OD at speed sometimes works and sometimes it's like it's in Neutral.

Reverse slips like crazy and was fine before the stumble.

The tranny is a TCI that I put in 2 1/2 years ago after the original died with 155k on it. I don't race but I do pull a boat and trailer (total weight under 700 lbs.) I've been doing this since I bought the car new.

Help

The one way clutch(sprag) in the OD unit has failed, when in D3/D2/D1 & reverse, the overun (frictions) are taking the brunt.
It wil not last long in this condition.

Kevin.

I wasn't towing at the time. But I always tow in OD. Over 90,000 miles towing and 155k total on the original tranny before it died less than 15k on the TCI!

Thanks.

Does anyone know of a transmission builder in the Raleigh NC area or within 100 miles or so that can properly rebuild these. My original transmission is sitting in my garage and I'd prefer to have that rebuilt rather than mess with the TCI one that has a weird valve body.

Careful who you take it to. I don't trust random local trans builders I'm always worried they are gonna screw it up or steal your performance parts out of the trans (your original GN one). Freight shipping is not too expensive I would ship it to Bruce Toelle or Lonnie Diers who ever is closer. Those guys can build you a great trans. Then you don't have to worry about it ever, esp if you are towing.

I ended up ordering a stage 2 from Lonnie. I'll send the old BFR to mim for the core. I'm not sure what I'll do with the one I got from TCI yet.
