Just wrapping up a rebuild using the Limit Engineering kit. I slide in the turbine wheelshaft, seat the seal, slip on the little collar thing on the cold side, stick on the compressor wheel, and then the nut.

The problem is: the compressor wheel spins on the shaft. Well, yes, duh, but if I tighten the nut, it seems that the wheel bottoms out and the whole assembly is very difficult to spin. Loosen the nut, and the whole thing spins freely, but the comp wheel spins semi-independently of the turbine wheelshaft. Seems to be no middle ground.

What did I do / could I have done wrong? Really feels like I need some glue! Could something not be cleaned enough? Something nto seated right inside? Turbine wheelshaft not going into the housing far enough? I'm sorta stumped -- I definitely remember / understand that the compressor and turbine must spin together!

Thanks!

Same problem

I am having this same problem. I was thinking that the turbine wheel/shaft was not pushed in far enough so I put on the hot side on. The turbine spins without hitting the housing. So, I think it's in all the way.
My problem is that I can not tighten the compressor nut without causing the turbo to freeze up. I read that I should tighten the nut to 18-20 inch pounds plus 90 degrees. I can tighten the nut by hand (no wrench) and the turbo seems to spin as freely as it did before I took it apart. I have tried to hand tighten and add 90 degrees but this completly locks up the tubo (I can only turn a wrench about 45 after hand tighting the nut)
I think my problem might be that I'm using the old nut. Any thoughts? TIA

If it spins but has resistance I woould say that it would immediately need a rebuild or replacement. Once those bearings touch metal Its failure from that point on. I could be wrong though but from my experience.....mine never lasted more that 5k after the initial time i found out.

Now as far as that tightening up. It should be doing that but you need to find that sweet mark where its in a happy medium without locking. good luck my friend.
