Got home tonight from a quick drive & I couldn't get my shifter to go back up into park all the way. After messing with it back & forth a few times the shifter just lost all tension & moved freely, loosely back up but wouldn't change gears.... I crawled under the car & manually put it back into park. I got back in & tried move the shifter back down into gear & it felt fine... Clicked all the way down into 1st.... Trouble is, when I tried shifting it back up, again no tension & moved very freely & wouldn't engage any gears up or down... Any suggestions???

After reading through some of the shifter cable threads on here, I'm thinking my shifter cable is broken.... So, if anyone has a new or used oem replacement cable they'd like to sell please pm me.... Thanks

It sounds like you're cable might be buckled under the console. If it broke the shifter would be limp in both directions permanently. When you went from park to drive, the shifter was pulling on the cable. If it buckled it wouldn't push the cable to put it in park but it would allow you to go to drive again.

Easy enough to check by popping out the ashtray and removing the two screws. Don't forget you can grab the base of the steering column and put it in park too. That little trick is a lifesaver when the shifter cable breaks.

Yes, it seems it will pull the cable, but not push it...... I'll definitely check on that.... Thanks!!

You could have also broken the clip that holds the cable at the trans end

Found the problem...... Cable came apart on the shifter end under the console...Looks like several individual strands of wire sticking out right at the plastic sheath.....Ugh!! Time for a new cable....Anyone have a oem one around they'd like to sell? Pm me if so.... Thanks

I'm using a $26 ATP unit from advance auto parts and it's working fine. I kinda wish I'd written a 'how-to' guide as changing a cable is more of a bitch than you'd think with lining up the shifter with the transmission and making both of them in sync with the steering column and reverse lights.
