Best thing I would say is find something that you are already good at, interested in, and find a way to market that skill, product, whatever. Don't go looking for some canned deal as a magic pill. Most successful business owners work more than 40hrs a week so if you think your getting away from "the grind", think again.

Lady down the street from us sells Avon products, while taking care of her kids at home. Has a big ass truck drop ship a bunch of stuff every couple of weeks. She seems to do really, really well.

She quit her job a couple of years back, makes her own hours, and bought her boyfriend a new Nissan 350Z for his birthday.

No, I'm not suggesting you sell lipstick and mascara for Avon, for your new career, just find yourself a chick who does!!!

Landscaping. You hire illegals & walla $$$$$$

It is lucrative & you can start right from home with a pickup truck a few mowers. I have seen many folk around me do this.

One kid I grew up with did this while we were in high school.
We all use to laugh at him as we would be out goofing off after school. He would work till the sun went down.

Today he doesn't work the physical aspect because he is the boss. He goes to his house in Florida for 3 months Dec, Jan & feb.

Now he is Laughing at us..

My 13 yr old cousin is doing this. He's got a partner and they cut quite a few lawns in their neighborhood. I've known more than one person that has done this throughout high school and they do very well for themselves.

I'm tired of the grind as well. I plan on doing something small, automotive related, that doesn't require huge amounts of space and a lot of equipment. I'm thinking I'm going to build aftermarket suspension components and try selling them at swap meets and online. The other idea was to port cylinder heads. I've even gone as far as buying an SF-300 Flowbench from a shop that was going under. The problem I see w/ that is I only have the capability of porting the heads. I have to rely on someone else for the refurbishing end of it. I don't want to buy any more equipment. Ultimately, my goal is to make $10k-$12k / yr extra just to support the car habit.

Look for 70"s & 80's cars that you can buy cheap $100 & under

Strip them, Store the parts & then sell the parts.

We had a Guy in Townsend mass that lived in a family neighborhood. His yard was fenced & he bought a few metal
sheds.
His Daily work was a truck driver. As he drove his route he spotted his victims sitting in yards.
He would go back, Buy, Haul em home, Strip them & junk em.

He sold most of the parts locally & at Car swap meets.

He stripped the TA's, Monte'ss or Regals he brought them on for Scrap metal. I remember Buying parts for my 81 TA from him.

Have you seen what the Monte SS boyz will pay for a Factory Dash tach on ebay

When I was really into the 4th gen f-bodies I parted out a torched '94Z28. I still have parts from that car. I've done the swap meet thing. The first one I went to I made $900 off parts I had lying around. It was gradually less each time I went because I was getting low on inventory. Space is a precious commodity in our house, but only because I have the garage and basement packed full of "stuff". I try to buy items I know I will use or know I can sell for a profit. The two best deals I've gotten are:

1) LT1 block, crank, intake, fuel rails, injectors, reconned rods, pistons for $175
2) GN valve covers, dog house, tb w/ arm, rear springs w/ air bag - $75

I've made money on #1 and still have the block. #2 I'm using most of the parts on the GN, but I bought them long before I owned a Buick.

I would love to part cars full time, but I don't have the space and am not sure it would replace my salary.

You live in the south so start detailing cars. Low overhead and i have a buddy who did this and he made a good living till he moved. Soap,water, wax, etc.

My friends wife was a stay at home mom with nothing but a high school education. She started complaining to the husband that she wanted more say in what they did with their income, he said when she made more than he did she could. So, with the kids in school full time she went with:

Pampered Chef
Candles (don't remember the brand)
Lingerie (don't remember the brand)

Depending on her schedule she clears between $6K to $10K a month.

I work as a systems and process analyst for an insurance company 500 miles away.
I worked in the office full time, but when family obligations required that I move out of state, I was given a lap top and a dedicated phone line to keep me connected to the office network.

It's the best deal I could have ever imagined.

That's a sweet deal. If I worked from home, I'd be fired in a week. My cars would be all badass and I get projects(house and car) completed in record time, though.

You could just go to work and know you will have a check every week. 82.7% of self started small business have failed this past year. I would like to stay home. Sometimes I do . However it takes it's toll on a paycheck .
