Here is how this past monday went for me, wanted to share sooner but too much going on.
I work night shifts and had just gotten home and gone to bed around 9 am. As I am falling fast asleep I hear a loud engine revving and tires peeling out in dirt followed by a crash and a series of bangs and pops. I push my self up fast push up style and throw on some jeans and run to the rear patio door expecting to see my neighbors truck in the backyard
I look around and don't see anything but I hear my other neighbor who is just as startled as I am and as we are dicussing who is going to go knock the idiot next door on his ass we see the power lines arcing and the cable line that goes to my house catches fire a few feet from my head. Idiot jumps the fence and sprays water on it which puts it out but it had also already fallen to the ground. Later the FD would say it was a bad idea to spray water on the line as it was electrically charged but it may have helped.
Myself and several neighbors call 911 and the fire dept comes out as well as PG&E, phone co, and the cable company.
The 11 homes on the street ended up being without power until around 3pm and several homes didn't just lose cable but their tv set also, including mine (62" Projection screen).
All in all the day ended up almost being over at 6 pm so I thought I could finally get a nap before going into work at 10:00 and then.....
one of the cat's RAN UP THE UTILITY POLE to the top!!!
He got spooked by the neighbors dog as we was walking along the fence. 1 hr and 40 min. later he finally clawed his way down. I would have used my extension ladder but it was in the neighbors tree, that's right, IN the tree. The ladder wouln't have reached anyways.
This was all caused by the neighbor trying to trim the tree himself ( a good 40-50 ft tall) using a buddy and his S10. His buddy cut the branches and he used his pickup with a rope tied to it and the branches to pull it down. The large tree sized branch they were working on fell and broke another branch knocking down the power line, causing it to hit the cable line, energizing it causing the small fire and loss of several TV sets.
Idiots story to the newspaper was that a strong gust of wind came and knocked the branch they were cutting into the branch below, knocking out the power. BTW wind was around 1-3 mph.
Now I just have to get my ladder back and get him to take care of the TV set.
And yes I DID TAKE PICTURES of everything including his truck tied to the branch and crashed into his gate. Cable guy wrote everything up also about the power surge taking out the tuner in the tv so now I need an estimate, etc.
It was a fun day that I will not be forgetting anytime soon. I ended up only getting 2 hours sleep all together, but slept like a baby the next day.
