Not to hijack......but i've been wondering the same thing. Got an NOS one to replace broken one(for 3 years).

sorry there is no "easy" answer.
you about have to take the inner fender and the fender itself off..... some one here may have the link to gn t type .org's write up if the site is back up,or do a search here.....
keep the new mast clean (wd40) and keep the motor section full of lube so the inner plastic gear wont dry out and break....

There is a proceedure, and a part number for the replacement cable. The number has changed, I know as I just inquired about one to replace on my car.
Good luck, let us know if you do it soon. I am in need of doing mine, but have other things to do first.
