Hi All,

We just finished a road trip through northern GA, eastern TN, and western NC. We did NC64, NC197, the BRP, Tail of the Dragon, Cherahola Skyway, and numerous other (fine!) roads plus a couple of train rides. We really liked the Blowing Rock, NC and Chattanooga, TN areas in particular.

After a week up there, we are thinking of a permanent move after I retire (about 5 yrs). Looking for pro's and con's of each state as far as taxation, emissions testing, cost of living, etc. We'd prefer a country atmosphere with quick access to a major town (hospital, shopping, dining). A couple acres and minimal traffic would be nice. I'm guessing there are few tornados because of the terrain? Is the drought is the only current "problem"?

Give me some good links to look through!

Thanks!

Too bad it's 5 years away. I've just decided to put my house on the market.
Low taxes here, no state income tax, no auto related inspections of any kind, low cost of living, no tornadoes (to close to the mountains). Tail of the Dragon just a few miles away,
I have 1.5 acres and a house that's made for a car guy! see photo link in sig.

Nice house!
What is the property value if you donlt mind me asking?

Chattanooga is revamping their city and it's getting better, but if I were to choose I'd go to TN for the taxes and live toward Knoxville too. I'm going to be up that way in a few weeks for some ATV riding.

We're looking at 289,000 according to comps.

3br, 2ba, tile and carpet, full unfinished basement plumbed for bath, 4 oversize garage stalls(2 up, 2 down), 1.5 acres.

Wow....That house/property would cost AT LEAST 100k more here in the great tax state of Connecticut!! Sounds like a great deal!! We are thinking of a move hopefully within 5 years also. Would love to move to eastern TN as I have a TON of family down there in the Sevierville area. S10xGN, I would highly recommend that area. Good luck on the sale TurboDave.

My wife and I went to Nashville for our honeymoon in June and absolutely LOVED it! If it weren't for so much family up here, we would move to TN in a heartbeat!

Lets all move to TN then! We could have a good Buick club.

I'm ready to leave FL.

OK!! I'll meet you guys at 7-11 around 5:00pm and we'll set up a club!!! God knows i'm ready to get out of this freakin @!%*#! state.

You may want to consider south georgia also. I am about to really blow you out of the water guys. When I bought my place it did not have a house on it but a mobile home thats about 28 by 70 or so. The only way they would sell me the whole place was if I bought the home to get them out from under it. It is a 2002 model at least so it was in good shape. That was the bad, Now for the good, The newer model mobile home which I can sell when I build my house, a 30x50 metal shop with 2 roll up doors and concrete floor, pond on property but I did have to repair it, and 10 acres of land. Yes you read that right , 10 acres thats all clear land with decent grass on it. 65,000 for all of it!!!!!!!!!! You can't buy a hummer for that lol. Daniel Ray

Went to Pigion Forge for the RTH3 loved it, I think Scott W has been talking to me about moving I am serious thinking about it The people are great and the weather is excellent and car shows out the ass and Bristol not far away.

Western NC Here.... about 30 min from Boone, Blowing Rock & Banner Elk. Asheville is an easy drive, which is a nice town as well. Love the small town friendly feel as I only have 4 neighbors in a one mile radius. Land & housing is very reasonable unless you build on the lake. State gas tax sux at +.30 gal but emission testing is easy for any thing under a 1992 model (I've heard that next year it's going to a 1993). Lots of car shows, drag strips under a hour’s drive and home of the largest car show/swap meet in the US (Charlotte Auto Fair). Good trout, sm & lg mouth and stripper fishing & deer hunting if you like that as well.

Btw....lived here all my life and never had a tornado within 2 hrs of me, hope it stays that way.

Davie co. NC near winston-salem,char,concord, very nice place and close to everything.

We never made it to Boone, but Blowing Rock was fine! I wouldn't mind an "occasional" snow once retired, but have always hated having to go out in it (I moved here from NY in 1975).

What's the scoop on NC property/income taxes? TX has no income tax, we pay ~ $3500 a yr on a $225,000 home along with 1800 insurance plus 8.25% sales tax. Cost of living is pretty reasonable, but I hate being in hurricane alley!

Yup! It'd take a whole lot to make me move back there- 'bout the only things I miss are the beaches, fishing, and a few friends.....
