info on working in Puerto Rico??

Hey all,

I may have an oppurtunity to take some contract work in Puerto Rico. It is expected to last 3-6 months.

Has anyone here been there? I have a 1 ton based bucket truck that I would need to take over there along with my wife, son, and possibly my 2 year old dog.

The contractor I will be working for has agreed to pay to take my truck there, but I will be responsible for getting it back to the mainland.

1) How much is the cost of living over there? Housing, food, gas?

2)Will I have any problems getting my truck back into the US? ANy taxes/tariffs when bringing it back?

3)Will my dog have to be quarintined(sp)?

4) I will be rebuilding the CATV system, anyone know how the locals treat americans away from the touristy spots?

Anything else I should know?

My wifes family is from Puerto Rico. As a matter of fact, my wife's Grandmother just arrived here today to stay for a few weeks while my mother-in-law has breast surgery. Found out a couple weeks ago she has cancer Anyway, we went over to visit for New Years and I can tell you that the city seems a little "dirty." Actually, the whole country was, well, not what I expected. San Juan was very neat but also crowded. Don't forget that it's an island about 50 miles x 100miles with almost 4 million people! Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of neat and historic things and places to go and see but it just felt busy and dirty. As far as getting your truck over there, I wouldn't know. I'm sure you could contact the local officials and get that info. They do use American money and you don't need a passport because it's a commonwealth of the USA. Don't forget to check out the Bacardi factory Arecibo(sp)the worlds largest radio telescope,very cool the rain forest, the beaches, El Moro in San Juan, etc.

I've been to PR twice. Went back the second time because I loved the first time so much...lol.

The weather was fantastic, even though we'd just missed a hurricane the second time and the beaches are outta sight.

I liked the people, never had a single problem...they seem to not get caught up in global politics and simply enjoyed life. Lotsa TR racing there also according to a customs agent I spoke to about it....sadly this was on my way out of the country, not going into it.

For specifics on what you asked get on the net and start lookin' for a phone number to ask your questions if no one here can help.

I'd jump at a chance to spend more time there AND GET PAID FOR IT. I think you're wife would like it if she can accept a temporary culture change. Of course your kid wouldn't care at that age .... feed him lots of beer and take him to the beach a lot.
