I am going to install a spearco intercooler on my car and in the instructions it say's to grind off three of the fins on top of the intake for turbo clearance. I have another intake that I bought to modify because I don't want to grind on the original. What I am thinking about doing is just milling off all of the fins on the one I bought and then milling new fins or heat sinks. How thick is the top of the intake? I also hear a lot about porting hot air intakes, any tips?

Thanks Tim

You won't have any problems with thickness if you mill the fins all the way down. You only HAVE to mill 3 of the fins down for clearance. When I cut the top off, mine seemed to be between 3/8" and 1/2" thick although I didn't mearsure.

I've posted this a lot before on the intake porting. Most of my gains were from porting the runners. I eventually cut the top off and gutted it along with taking out the EGR floor (EGR still functional). I wouldn't go to the trouble of gutting it unless you're looking to go very fast. I could barely tell a difference from gutting it although there was a difference. In it's final form, I welded material on the outside the runners, straightened them, and ported them to the felpro1200 gaskets. Probably overkill.

I have an I Win Engineering intake that was ported and polished: http://www.my84t-typenj.50megs.com/photo3.html

that pic is of the old egr hum, and the new at the bottom of the page. The EGR is still functional, but just barely (NJ Emissions)

Anyway...Porting the heads and intake are almost required if you want performance gains out of these cars to really show. You can leave everything stock and pull 13's if you are real good at the tuning aspects...but the easier way,a nd a little more expensive way, port and gasket match everything!!!

good luck!

John
