Hotair intercooler

I am working on trying to get a package deal from (Spearco) owned by Turbonetics, Inc. 805-581-0333. So far $950.00 is the best price I have been quoted. They said that they were going to put a better price together around the holidays. Are there any other people wanting to put intercoolers on their 84-85 cars, maybe we can get enough people to lower the price?

i talked to jerry and looked at his car this year at bg.they did a good job with the install,he didn't have all the bugs worked out when i talked to him.

intercooler conversion

I saw Jerry's pictures, thats why I called Spearco. I would probably mount the intercooler the same way. The old turbo motion setup used about the same mounting system and a front entry intake "V2" I think they called it. If anyone has any information on the V2 it would really cut down on the long plumbing issues. Was the V2 a modified hot air manifold? or a complete new casting? Moving the throttle body to the intake instead of the turbo would really improve performance.

intercooler conversion

Hey guys for your information, I did finally get the project done. I haven't been able to tune the car still due to the fact that I went to college and the car stayed at home. The car is awaiting a paint job, but it was either go to school or get the car painted and that wasn't really a decision I even had to think about. I will eventually get the car painted and tuned down. I have got some 13.40's @ 98-9 mph out of the car with what I suspect was due to a failing walbro fuel pump. I in turn got the complete setup from Racetronix and installed it to clear that problem from occuring. I also downsized my turbo from about a 61 (which was way too big for my car) to a 49 which will just straight up kill on the street (which was what I want my car to be). So there is kind of an update on the car. It is in a state of hibernation right now until I get enough money to pay for the paint and have enough time free to at least get the crappy paint stripped off before I send it to the body shop. The car is definitely good for 12's I just have to mess with it and I havent had the time. Thanks for checking out my site guys and good luck with your projects. May 26 psi worth of force be with you my son.

Intercooler conversion

The Spearco kit # 2-135
Details: This proven & thoroughly tested intercoller system has a high flow core, carefully sized to maximize engine performance & yet maintain a workable engine coolant temperature. Pressure drop is down to a minimum with charge air temperature reduced as much as 110*F making this system a very effective performance enhancer. Power increases as much as 24% as the result of dense air charge. The system is complete with all necessary mounting hardware, including 2-1/4" diameter tubes, throttle body adapter, manifold adapter, & all necessary hardware. Installation time is approximately 6-7 hours, which includes repositioning the compressor housing. Thats all I have for now. Let me know if anyone else is interested in really buying one, rflint@mn.rr.com

The tubomotion set up used a hot air intake that Jay modified.
I wonder if a modified 86/87 wouldn't have been a better starting point?

The problem with the 86/7 intake is it sits up slightly higher and the thermostat housing is located in the wrong place...I've done I think the only conversion so far that I have heard of using the stock 86/7 lower intake but still keeping the stock 84/5 turbo/DP location...There is a lot of clearance issues with using the later 86/7 intakes on hotair setups and that is one of them...I talked at length with Jay about my setup and he had evened experimented with using the 86/7 intakes instead of the 84/5 intakes, but there were problems with doing it with the 86/7 intakes...He wanted a fairly "easy" bolt-on swap, but there was just too many things involved in using the 86/7 intakes for him to be comfortable selling the kit to everyone...

Will you post a picture of your conversion using the 87 style intake or email me some pics? I have a complete donor engine,
but I am interested in the conversion using the intake and
IC only. Maybe move the coil pack to the back like the 86/87?

There are some pics in the Sticky at the top of this hotair forum page under the heading "PICS - relocated throttle body"

Also, be sure to read the discussion involved and also do a search about my doing this setup...Lots of info about why NOT to attempt what I did...

BTW, if you have a complete 86/7 GN/TR donor motor, DO THE SWAP!!! It will be easier for you to do that than what I did...My setup is not a simple thing to do...

p.s. When I get the time and the weather is warmer, I will end up finishing the swap over to the 86/7 setup...What I've got now is too much of a hassle to work on...

take it from me,there aren't any plumbing issues, just tuning issues.if you get a spearco kit,do yourself a favor and install it the way it was designed to install.there are no lag issues as long as you have a properly matched turbo and convertor and know how to tune your car.

in my opinion,if you aren't going to install the spearco kit the way it was designed you're better off buying a front mount kit for an 87 and fabbing up the rest of the required pipes.

Turbomotion?

I understand that Jay from turbomotion has retired? is that correct? Has anyone else done a hot air intercooled conversion? I see that some people use a ford intercooler in their discriptions. How are they set up? Please post some pictures of your conversions and what you had to overcome to get it done. I am still working on the Spearrco kit and hope to get it down to $900

Sorry, Jim, I didn't realize that you had started with an 86/87
manifold and you then had to make a custom upper plenum, I suppose. Very interesting. Nice job!

Postons innercooler kit

I just got done talking to Poston about their innercooler kit. Part #PE469441 Price is $1263.00, Phone # 1-800-635-9781
This is a front mount IC which is designed to fit larger turbo applications (TA49, TA60, TA61) They figure that you will need to upgrade the injectors, turbo, fuel pump, adjustable regulator and will cost about $3000 for everything. They claim that with the upgrades you should be around 575 hp.
