Internet getting REAL slllloooooow HELP!

I have cable modem, used to be fast!
I dump temp files very often, don't need defrag, have security settings on med (not maxed out), and use IE instead of AOL (a little faster that way).

I hear it's slower on internet with Norton Antivirus & internet security, but this is getting rediculous waiting for pages of new sites to load. Computer is way fast, connection is way fast, veiwing pages way slow.

I think there is a site out there that checks the speed of your connections, anyone got that? Any ideas or things to check/set??? My mouse can't stand much more slamming into my desk!

www.dslreports.com is another onw, make sure youhave java loaded. Have you run all the normal antispy stuff?

but websites still load slow. files download fast. some sites so slow I have to stop & reload.

my guess is that your computer is loaded with spyware,adware , etc...that's slowing it down. Try running the cleaning program "Ad aware personal" at www.lavasoftusa.com. Then go here http://www.tucows.com/preview/310138.html and download Spybot and run it.

Reboot your computer and see if it's any quicker?

Have you tried the AOL spyware protection program? It's actually found junk that Lava, Spybot S&D and Norton have missed on my computer.

That seems to be just over my head. Not sure how to backup registry or even what a registry is. Just when I thought I was gettin smart It does look like it would speed up things.

Ran spybot again, nothing found.

Ran Adaware, found 4 new ones came in while I was on internet this afternoon.

Loaded AOL version & ran it, found 4 more.

Deleted all, emptied temps & cookies,

It's a little faster now & reasonable to deal with. Not sure why my Norton Internet security & antivirus & firewall & spyware programs can't keep this poop out of my computer!!!!

It still seems slow loading stuff when multi-tasking. If opening aol, then IE, & other stuff at same time, it sure doesn't run like it should. It's worse than old computer IMO.

Looked at task manager cause it was slow again during aol spyware search. Had 50-60% of cpu being used, and 303,000 system cache of 523,000 total memory being used. With a 2.4 ghz pentium 4 with 512 MB DDRram & 512 MB bus computer, it should do multitasking better IMO. My laptop with under 1ghz pet 3 & 256 regular ram is faster, same spyware & norton on it.

Needs some tweaking Can I hook up Direct Scan & adjust the fuel pressure???

Which process?

When in task manager, click "processes" then "CPU" to sort by % used. What process is using the most? You can also go to start > run > then type msconfig > enter : then go to startup and see what programs load on startup. You can get rid of Office and most audio programs, quicktime, and any photo software that like to suck the life out of your computer. You can also sort task manager processes by memory used in the same way you did the CPU. The real high memory and CPU ones are what you want to unload at startup. Also go to start > programs > startup and delete as many programs as you can ( they are really only shortcuts most of the time). Post the processes with the highest score.

What OS are you running? With that CPU speed it should be XP. XP should have no less than Service Pack 2 installed on it. The XP firewall works fairly well, so you my want to ditch the Norton altogether and use AVG from grisoft.com (FREE).

The best spyware program I have found is spykiller 2005 you can DL it for free to check ya out but it wont fix it unless you buy it(or find a crack for it ).

IMO I dont like anything nortons, I like to use panda for the antivirius side of things, it dont run your system down like nortons.

Try going to TRENDMICRO and run there free online scan just to make sure nortons is not missing anything.

OK, ran the Spybot, nothing.
Ran the Adaware, found 3, removed them,
Ran AOL spyware, nothing,
ran Norton, found urpo.exe adware program in documents and settings area. When trying to get Norton to delete it, it doesn't & tries to get you to ignore it on future scans. Seems like a common thing from internet search, and didn't understand the complicated ways to remove it.

When I went to exact folder to manually remove it, can't find it. Did a search & computer says it's there, but can't find it.

Went to main folder it should be in, clicked TOOLS, FOLDER OPTIONS, VIEW, and then UN-SELECT "hide protected operating system files (recommended)", then APPLY & OK. File should appear, but still can't be deleted. Then got to control/alt/delete to get task manager, find hrpo & end process. Then go in folder & delete file. Felt like climbing mount everest finally deleting this bastard!!!

So, now after assuming I was spyware & adware & virus free, I downloaded & tried the SPYKILLER 2005 as suggested. It found 18 more serious threats. I bought it ($39.99) and removed them. It was a slow scan, but worked great! I previously ran other trial versions of pay versions, and (after thinking I was virus free) ran the trial versions, one found 5, another 8, and another 11. Even the higher rated ones that had 70,000 definitions only found 8. The SPYKILLER one has only 35,000 definitions, but it WORKS BETTER !!!

Thanks all for the help EVERYONE! Also removed a couple from startup menu, but had most gone from there already. Seems all is working fine now. This stuff should be illegal as murder! Lock them up & throw the key away !!!!! I still bet the scanning software companies pay hackers to keep hacking so we have to buy the stuff! Conspiracy theory in all

Unhide your files first. Go to Control Panel-Folder Options-View-Advanced Settings then Show hidden files. You should be able to find those files following the path from Norton.

The best and easiest program to use to check and edit your startup is Windows starup inspector ,it will tell you waht all the programs are if you dont know and its free!!!
