Can anyone provide a rough esitmate of where the stock ignition system begings to fail from a boost perspective. On my DSM the stock ignitio began to fail around 20 lbs are the buicks good up to 27 - 30 with no worry of spark blow out?

Bottom line, understanding plugs will have to be gapped differently for this level of boost can the stock ignition system handle the job?

I've run an eDist, with CNP coils, and now 3-ACCEL 300's (each one firing, an oem DIS coil). Even in daily driver mode, they were better then the oem. But with guys running as fast as they do with the stock setup, it seems few folks bother with working on the ignition end of things. With the eDist I was able to cut the side electrodes completely off, and run ~20 PSI of boost without missing. The ACCEL being CDI, gives the car an almost instant start even in the dead of winter (thou I have the later Quick Start 3x19 triggering, and later module/ sensor).

The eDist gets expensive, since you can hardly find a used one, and at ~30 a coil that adds up. You can find take of coil set-ups on ebay from time to time for about $100.

I found the 3 ACCEl units for less then $200, and Jeg's stocks the MSD CD conversions for each of the coils, when I got mine. And by using 3 of them, it gives me the multistrike coil firing up to red line.

MSD is advertising a new CNP coil, that they say is CDI compatible. IMO, those with a CDI would have to be the ultimate ignition setup.

To actually answer your queston, I've run the stock setup at 28 PSI without a hiccup. In around town driving, the *Seat of the Pants* says the better ignitions make a difference. There, IMO, is a diference between more or less steady state WOT, and around town when you're in and out of the various modes like cruise, Power Enrichment, Accleration Enrichment, etc, etc..

My car has run in the 7s and as much as 30#s of boost with the STOCK ignition. A lot of folks say it can't handle it - but it can! I'm not saying it's the best setup, but it can do it. Best setup that will take you as fast as you want to go with as much boost as you want would be a distributor and MSD 7AL box. The MSD-DIS stuff is crap as a lot of folks on this board can attest to.

dumb question on my part but these cars don't use a distributor, correct?

at least not the 87 T-Type all coil driven ignition systems. So you are saying aquire MSD DIS system and I am golden, but you have achieved low time slips on the stock system. if that is the case I think I will stick with the stock system save a couple dollars and invest else where.

Want to give me a description on your plug wires?

So far, all the MSD-DIS setups are junk. MSD has had issues with the DIS boxes - I don't know of many people who like it. I was referring to changing the stock coilpack ignition system over to a conventional distributor and regular MSD 7AL ignition box. You don't need to worry about this unless you are making some serious horsepower. My car has made upwards of 1200hp on a chassis dyno using the STOCK Buick coilpack setup. Plug wires are custom made to fit my engine.

I'm new to this board..but not the GN life...

I see in your sig it says "Tweaked 1"

No relation to the great "TWEAKED" back in the 90's ??

That would be the one - with several improvements. ;)

Bruce ever thought of selling your setup to the board members?

Have you done any logs or track times comparing the set ups, same applies to gas mileage per tank etc?

I also have a 91 talon and just upgraded the coil, but to the stock coil. Noticed a slight improvement in gas mileage and seemed to lean out the trims a tad across the board. AMS has a plug n play for the EVO and I believe a wire in for the 1st and 2nd gens.

I bet i still have the articles on it in different magazines...

Nice to meet you.
