My tcc solenoid is not controlled by a computer . 4th gear normally open switch locks it up if I have it switched on . Drops out of lockup wnen it drops to 3rd gear .
Other than the heat issue will there be any lubrication issues running around town in 3rd gear unlocked ?

No problems, I have done similar setups, is this a conversion---what motor and converter are you running?

Do you mean 4th gear unlocked? 3rd is 1:1 and converter wouldn't be locked even with the ecu controlling it. I have the same setup, lockup is controlled only by a switch. I was told by the shop that did my trans work I could drive around with it unlocked all the time but it would just burn more gas.

It's in my 34 Chevrolet . . . 350 , 200-4r , 3.08 rear . I probably made it a little more complicated than it needs to be . . . Switched 12 v through brake / cruise control switch to normally open 4th gear pressure switch to tcc solenoid . Also ran a parallel switched ground to the tcc solenoid to lock it up in 2nd , 3rd , and 4th . The switched parallel ground is more trouble than it's worth IMO . The converter is a stock rebuilt D5 . I've heard it's not good to run in 4th unlocked ( lubrication issues ). As long as it's in 4th gear (unless I switch it off or hit the brake pedal ) it will stay locked up in 4th until it drops down to 3rd or I shift it . If the speed gets low it will lug the engine . Is there a lubrication issue in 3rd gear running around town unlocked ? Thanx .

I never had any issues with lube locked or unlocked, maybe a little more heat in the oil running unlocked in 4th is the issue. locked up early in 4th with 3.08 gears probly pulls the engine rpm way down, your camshaft size will dermine if the motor likes it or not. The 4th gear switch is the better way to go.
