Hey guys,
Do any of you have a mitral valve prolapse, if so, what do you do to regulate it? Diet, meds, exercise? Mine usually doesnt bother me unless I am under lots of stress or have way to much caffiene. Just curious if there is anyone elsea, and what you do to control it?

I've got one. Got diagnosed with it when I was 17 years old. My mother has one, too. There is nothing you have to do to regulate it per se (at least not that I know of). I guess based on the severity of it there might be requirements. The only thing the doctor ever told me is that I have to beware of having any kind of dental surgery. If the blood gets infected, then bad things can happen to your heart since the blood leaks around. I think the heart may become infected. If it becomes severe enough, they will replaced with valve with the valve from a pig's heart.

For what it's worth, I forget about it until I see something that reminds me of it. I've never had medicine for it, other than antibiotics before dental surgery, I've never noticed any adverse effects from it, and I've done just about all the stupid things in life that I want to. :D I'll continue to do so until I die or a doctor tells me otherwise.

I also have it. Just found out about it last summer.Doc said I could have had it for years. when i found out i thought it was all over! I have since learned that its fairly common. I had an echocardiograhm and it showed that although the mitral vave was leaking, everything else was OK. I have to get another one next month and if all checks good i can wait 3 years before getting another one. No restrictions, and no medication except like Linearx, i need to take a mega dose of amoxicillin before going to the dentist to prevent infection.Doc actually encouraged more excercise.

It is rather common. In the vast majority of cases, it will NEVER cause you problems. As mentioned before, in some cases, your doctor will recommend antibiotic prophylaxis prior to dental procedures (surgeries, etc). In a small percentage of people, it will cause problems, but usually after decades.

My wife has it. The doctor doesnt think it's a big deal. She dosent have to do anything for it.

You should be on a 2g loading dose of Amoxicillin one hour before any invasive dental procedure...that includes getting your teeth cleaned. Failure to do so may lead to a septicemia which is not a medical complication to be taken lightly.
