hey can you guys give me an idea what the thing looks like and the wire colors

I forgot the color. The switch assembly contains the Neutral saftey switch along with the back-up light switch. It is located on the top side of steering column almost at the fire wall. It is white in color and can be adjusted by moving the section that contains the switch connections to the left or right. If you need to remove it this can be done by slidding a thin screw driver between the base tab that extends into the column and gently getting the locking tab to release. There are two tabs total, one on either side of the switch assembly.

I hope your not a big person and are able to stand on your head.

hey robert im trying to hook up the neutral switch that goes to the ecu theres a blk/org and blk/wht wires how do i hook that up to my aftermaket shifter

If your adding a shifter you will probably need to reconnect the back-up lights also. Your shifter should come with a switch for the back-up lights and one for the neutral safty switch. The easiest thing to do is just to remove the assembly from the steering column, and then pull the connecters. If you check out your shifter you should notice two sets of cam slots. The back-up light switch will ride in one and the neutral safty switch will ride in the other. You will have to adjust each switch. I had to file the metal finger on my switch down a little to keep it from getting caught on the sides. The switches provided are probably and should be normally open contacts. When the switch is activated it will provide a ground to complete the circuit. If I remember right the ground is applied to the ECM while the shifter is in PARK and NEUTRAL. This is the cam slot that the neutral safty switch will ride in. The other cam slot should cause the back-up lights to energize while the shifter is in reverse. Your can purchase the matching connectors so you do not have the splice or cut your wires,,,,,,,,I spliced mine.

As a note the neutral safty switch as we have been calling it will not keep the car from cranking while it is in gear. That is done with a mechanical interlock keeping the key from turning. This mechanical interlock is provided by the shifter rod connection between the gear shift lever and the steering column. If you remove this lever you will be able to crank the car in gear. The neutral switch is used by the ECM,,,,,,,,,, and from what I understand only for the purpose of going from a idle/park type of timing and fueling to a in gear setting. Warning,,,,,,,,the linkage is also what locks the steering wheel,,,,,,,,,so if you remove it you will need to lock the lever on the engine side of the fire wall in the upward position. Doing this is against NHRA and IHRA rules. You should not be able to crank your car in gear. You would possibly fail a state inspection if this is checked. So,,,,,,, connect the each switch and keep the linkage.

i have the hurst lightning rods good luck trying to find the switches for it

Chance I think the easiest and best thing for you to do is to keep the linkage between the transmission and the steering column. Usually the shift kits provide a new bracket for the transmission and it removes the old bracket leaveing no place to reconnect the linkage. What I would do is get another stock shifter bracket. The one on the transmission. Cut the portion that connects to the steering column linkage and have it welded to the bracket supplied with the shifter. If this is done right all you should have to do is adjust the shifter cable and the linkage. If you lay the two on top of each other. Place a bolt in the center area to help hold them in alignment. Bend the cable end of the stock one if needed to make it lay flat,,,,,,,,you only want a small part of it anyway. Then you should be able to make a scribe mark and the stock bracket. Cut along that mark, But before you cut you might want to add some alignment marks while the two are on top of each other. This should help the person who does the welding.

wow another one of those search guys if the search button had given me what i wanted i wouldnt have posted now with that said let me say this I WANT TO HOOK UP A NEUTRAL SAFTY SWITCH TO MY SHIFTER and remember im not yelling im just saying it loud enough and clear enough for you to hear me the first time

Good luck with that. Sounds much easier than a simple weld on the stock linkage.
