I think I snapped the input shaft on my 200R4. Punched it on the
acceleration ramp Friday night and it went bang - red line. Coasted over the shoulder onto the feeder and finlly got towed home. Engine seems fine but instead of P-R-N-OD-D-2-1, I now have P-N-N-N-N-N-N.

1. Is there anyone closer (I live in far NW Houston a bit NW of Willowbrook Mall near Cypresswood and Grant and Eldridge) than Mike Kurtz in Richmond that I can trust with my tranny? At a minimum, I'll be wanting a hardened input shaft installed and would really like to deal with someone that knows the BRF 200R4.
2. Any other thoughts about what might be wrong?

i can't tell you where to go, but i just rebuilt my tranny. i bought the pts rebuild kit and a few other things, sent it to a guy i know, $1200 later i have a mediocre tranny. its ok and will do what i want it to do but i know if i hit a few 11's i'll have to rebuild it again. i just think it will hold up. if i could do it over again i'd spend the extra $200 and buy a built tranny from pts, or janis or any of the other tranny companies out there. you have something that you know is going to work and its done. if i could do it over again thats what i would do. just my thoughts.
 
Mine did the same thing one time, I thought for sure that it was the input shaft, however it turned out that the pump took a dump on me.:eek: An easy way to check is to take one of the cooler lines off, start the car, and see if any fluid comes out. If it doesn't then it is the pump.
 
I'd be willing to bet a case of your favorite beer that the input shaft is just fine. It's EXTREMELY rare to bust one. What is VERY common however, is the shaft on the intermediate drum (weakest point in the tranny).
 
Dave's got it right. That's really what I should have said. Now how would I know? :o That's where mine broke. It was a loud boom too.

I don't know for sure but, I think that if the shaft on the forward drum broke the tranny would have reverse. :confused:
 
I may have missed something but if the tranny is stock, i would take a strong guess that its the stator, the drum is fragile as well but I think the stator is the first to go in most cases. Good luck with it Buzz i really don't know anybody else in Houston that can, Kurts is expensive and nobody else is very good, ill ask around though. I rebuild mine myself with my dad to avoid the really high cost

P-NNNNNN with enough rpm it would roll on a level surface

it was the stock D5 converter that snapped internally , turned out tranny was ok and could have gone right back into service with another converter but after seeing the wear on the input and knowing it had 128K on it and not knowing if it had ever been worked i had the trans rebuilt anyway since it was out ,
 
Forward drum snaps and you get NOTHING.

It is not the same as forward clutches going away. The shaft is driven by the OD ring gear. It is the only thing connecting the input shaft with the rear portion of the trans.

The direct drum is wrapped around the forward drum, it provides reverse, while letting the planets spin in the forward clutch portion of the forward drum.

Shaft snaps, no go. Moght as well be an input shaft.

86 or 87 model BRF would have had the hardened stator.

First thing to do is pull a pressure check on the trans before you pull it. Make sure you didn't break the pump. If you have pressure, you have more than likely broke the input shaft. You didn't mention how much power you are pulling and that would make a big difference in what you put back into the trans when you do fix it. Hardened parts are good if you are running stock to mild build. Anything more and the only way to make sure you don't have to take it apart again before you need to is to use billet parts.
Mike Kurtz is the one guy in Texas I would trust with any of my trans work. There may be a few others, but I know Mike's standards and how he builts. You won't be sorry going a little out of your way to get him involved.

Jake since when does a brf have a hardened stator stock? i've never heard this and this hasn't been my experience, every GN tranny with a stock stator ive ever seen was stripped on the splines and appeared no different than the other 200s ive seen? Ive broken a stocker with no more than 300 at the rear, and so have a couple of good friends?
 
It is my understanding that after about late 84 or so they came stock with these parts. I may be thinking of the sun shell though...

Although both of the BQ and BRF unit's I have had the hardened stator already.... One had been rebuilt, the other I don't think had.

I know the sun shells on brfs are hardened and are darker in color and do not scratch easily like a regular one, but i believe all the stators are the same. I could be wrong, you are a lot more experienced than me but none of my families 3 GNs or my a friends T have had a hardened stator, if they are they are pretty crappy as all of their splines were very worn. Have a good one:)
 
Jake had me confused on that one as well... I think you're thinking about the sunshell.

How can you tell if a shaft is the stock or billet piece? I have an older artcarr unit that'll I'm gonna rebuild sooner or later and I believe it has the improved input/output shaft, but not sure.
 
Same thing happend to me on an on ramp three years ago. Punched it and it went bang and hit redline. P-Nnnooothiiiing! Actually, in gear if I revved it pretty good it would move a little. Turned out to be a cracked pump. Had it rebuilt at AAMCO. I know, I know, but I was on the road, had a deadline, and no airplanes were flying (9/11) so no shipping. Come to present day. My trans is a piece of crap, the shifts are for sh*t, and a drunk driver HIT MY FREAKIN' CAR!!!!!!!:mad: Sorry, totally unrelated. The point is, get a good trans built now or you'll most likely be doing it later.
