just bought a 87 T-type that I intend to swap motor into my 85 GN. The turbo on the 87 motor is junk, fins missing off of impeller and oil in intercooler...I got the car at a real good price because the seller was hurting for money and he said the car just kept running worse and worse..my question is should I rebuild the stock turbo or upgrade to something else..I am only looking for a strong street car something in the mid to low 13 second range. In addition who should I contact about rebuilding this turbo if that is the best way to go? Is there any special way to clean the intercooler out...Looking for any advice as I know zilch..thanks

With the intercooler off the car about 3/4 of a coffee can of gasoline will clean it out if heavily soiled.
Slosh it around by hand back and forth about a minute or two.
Obviously drain it out well and you can repeat the amount until it runs clear as regular gas. AIR DRY ONLY, NO hairdriers either.
Or if not heavily soiled, carb. cleaner or perhaps denatured alky. will work as a good solvent.
I only clean mine once a year tops so I use gasoline. Some say it hurts the fin bonding as gasoline is kinda harsh. Dissolves the heavy oil and sludge however.
Make sure it is dry, no odors before putting it back on the car and using it.

The TA-49 is a bad mamo-jamma turbo for the price. I suggest you give John Craig a call. He is the MAN! He will get you what you want. He is not BS. All turbo, all the time.
