well its my turn to fix the my 86 t-type. i was leaving to go to school one mourning and was coming outta the neighborhood and i had to put the gas on just a little bit no more then 5-7 lbs of boost. well i did that and i hear a big bang (backfire abviously) i said oh no what a time to do this. well air was leaking out somewhere and its done this same sound before and it was my crossover pipe that came loose. so i figured it was the same thing nothing major. so i pull the car back to the house and put it on stands. i tighten the cross over pipe bolts and crank it up and what happends it does the same thing by this time i was in a jam and needed to get to school with or without my car. so i call around to my friends cell and ask him what he thought since he has a 86 gn which is awesome and insainly fast to me atleast. but anyways he tells me to check the oil because maybe it was a head gasket. so i looked at the oil and it was perfectly fine well i thought it was the header then maybe it cracked pretty bad so the next day i took the header off and replaced with another on we have from our stack of gn parts lol. anyways i change the headers and get the new one on there and well same out come air is coming from somewhere else:mad:  . so i have my father get up under the car and look to se what he could find since he knows about the gns too because he has an 86 gn. so he looks and says theres your problem. i said what he said your head gasket is blown. a piece of the head gasket was hanging over the edge of the block. so now i am like oh great new gaskets and everything how fun and no car to drive to school looks like i gotta ride the cheese:mad:. well i started taking the motor out of the car and now i have the 2 motor mounds left and then i can pull it out but i did all of this myself no joke. and i am only 17 years old sorry but i am kinda proud of my self to be able to do all that my self. but anyways i am pulling the motor so its easier to get to and also i can check on the block and make sure everything is ok i am trying to play it safe. i am also pulling the tranny out because when i come from a dead stop the tranny starts hopping the rear wheels and it really annoying and we go another tranny that i am going to test out. but i was wondering what do i need to torque the head bolt down to i will be using arp bolts i belive and the felpro 1000 head gaskets. any help with this would be nice thanks.

mods: te 34 turbo 17 lbs boost, adjustable fuel pressure regulator,38 lb injector, forged pistons .30 over,k&n air filter 12 inch, can remeber the cam but it not stock its a reed cam that wahat i remeber. AND IT IS THE FASTEST CAR AT SCHOOL.hehehe

Use stock replacement Fel-Pro head gaskets, blue Perma-torques. If you are using ARP bolts, phone the number on the box and ask what the recommended torque is for their bolts, and your application.

well

well i have the felpro 1000 already ad i did not have to buy them so i am going to try to use them if that makes any difference. i am trying to get out as cheap as i can.

thanks jim

This is an area that you want to get things right, because if not you will not be getting out cheap in the long run. FP 1000s more often than not do not seal the water jackets in the long run if not immediately. 4 bolt holes per cylinder are not enough to compress the fire ring on these gaskets, I don't know if it's because the are too thick or because they are stainless. Any way, I'd use stock turbo gaskets or FP9441s. For torque, alot of people torque over recommended specs. Personally, I believe ARP knows more about bolt stretch and tensile strength than I do, so I went with their recommendations. Just use a reliable high quality torque wrench.

Way back in the day,,, when the Fel-Pro 1000's were the only real gasket upgrade, I and others used them religiously. However, time and technology have shown us there are better options, and ironically enough, many people and GN shops have gone back to using the stock GM graphites. They work very well, and if you are not trying to run 25psi through them, they are a good choice. I have put several sets of the 1000's on my different TR's over the years, and have blown every one of them. I never had water sealing problems as someone mentioned, but, they are a thick gasket that will possibly increase the chance of blowing out more so than the other gaskets mentioned above.
ARP's are a must, and "yes", use their specs. Also, be sure to torque the gaskets the way Fel-Pro or whichever brand you buy suggests. I do believe Fel-Pro provides the torque sequence, and I have always followed it.

Another extremely important thing to do, in order to prevent future blown hg's is; RETORQUE them after you've run it through a heat cycle. It's a little extra work, but it is an absolute must on these and any race application vehicle. Especially one that's forced induction! I cannot stress it enough, and this comes from 10+ years working on these cars, as well as advice from top shops and performance mechanics.

I BEG YOU, DON'T USE THE 1000s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unless you want to pull the motor once a week:D
