Still learning (show isn't even half over) but I think the X prize was money to the first person (private party?) to put an aircraft into space twice in 14 days.

within 7/10 days.

Rutan is a true genius, IMO. Some of his phrases, ie "Research is doing what 50% of the people say can't be done", or something like that.
