I'd never buy an off-the-shelf computer. You get inferior quality parts, and ton's of crap pre-installed that you would never need/want.

I say build your own, it's extremely easy, I could guide you through buying parts and assembling it if you want. Kind of like building your own motor vs. buying a crate motor ;)

OR, buy one from me ;) I've specialized in custom computers for the past 5 years, furnishing many an office with them :)

EDIT:

If you MUST have off the shelf, go with dell. heres a great deal

defintiely build your own, but get stuff that has a manufacturers warranty, trust me. I say that you could build a better comp than that for around $600-$800, If you need help, you can email me.

Mark didn't you tell me two years ago that you were trying to stop the HSN?

 That was my wife's shopping not mine. At least I buy good stuff, not super duper vitamins and all the crap Suzanne Somers sells.

Didn't go for the new computer, will try some of the other avenues suggested.

If you can just build your own..if thats not an option then use tigerdirect.com or one of the other places that just assemble them with brand name parts. Plus nooooooo Intel....get yourself an AMD.

I built computers and repair them for a living, 3 things with that computer, better video card would be better, more memory from 1gb to 2gb would be optimal and get rid of the internal sound and have them install a sound card in it. other than that is a good system.. and yes you can build your own for less.. :)
