Is it correct that the proper trans level on the 2004r is , with engine and trans hot, while idling in neutral, the fluid should be about pan level.? JUst want to know because I think my trans dipstick is not correct....the guy at TransGO where I got my shift kit from tells me that the correct way to check it is to get trans to operating temp, while engine running in neutral with car level on jackstands , to loosen one side of pan, let the trans fluid kinda gush out...till it is just barely coming out, thus the fluid is at the gasket, or pan level. TIghten pan, then to make a mark on the dipstick, and that should be the correct "full" hot mark.
Reason being, I'm having a problem with the trans during normal driving at around 60mph or higher it will blow a lot of fluid out the vent tube...like about a quart in 6-7miles...all over the bottom and back of car. I had the car filled to the full mark correctly....after I had this problem, the guy at transgo tells me that the main reason for the overflow out the vent tube is overfilling of trans...and to check it the way described above...
Any trans guru's out there have any ideas. The car is my 1989 turbo ta, with 39k miles. I have a vigilante 2800 single disc lock up. I don't think I had the problem before. Prior to installing the shift kit, the motor was lugging down after slowing down from a highway cruise, at around 45mph it would start to buck etc...so I did some searches on the forum..seems that most people that had the problem (torque converter staying locked) just put in a new lock up solenoid switch and that fixed it. I got the 7004r like Bruce sells and installed it with a couple washers. The valve above the solenoid was free, I pushed up on it with a screwdriver. So the only things I've done is the transgo shift kit and the 7004r solenoid valve. Transgo also recommended me putting in a stock 2004r valve to try that. I haven't driven car yet, still waiting on solenoid valve from dealer. If I keep the trans fluid where it is at Pan level...just want to make sure that is correct.
