My set up diagram before the rebuild , is this correct as far as wire placment goes. Ignore motor reference I know its not correct only shows how the coil wires are connected, Confused yet?
4 2
5 3
6 1 front of motor

4-5-6
1-2-3 coil pack

Plug wires are connected I beleave 4 and 5 may be crossed this is on an 85 with an 87 ecu upgrade. Been on line all night to find the correct wiring sequence.

The only reference I could find shows below which is not even close to what I have:

6 5
4 4
2 1 Front of Motor

1-5-3
4-2-6 coil pack

fireing order

Hi,
Yes, you got me, I am confused by your diagrams. Ok, two things I know. First, Firing order on these engines is: 165432. Second, on both the hot air '84 -'85 engines, and and the intercooled '86-'87 engines, the coil orientation was the same as far as firing order, but it was turned around from front to rear as far as the mounting of the coilpak was concerned. In other words, rotate your wires front to back. Looks like polarity is the main thing, I don't know about primary hookup, should reverse. Tiny numbers should be visible next to the coil towers. Driver's side is number 1. Good luck!

sometimes the coil can get flipped around when its replaced , if you look down below the coil towers on the ledge youll see the #s for which cylinder they go to.
the coil pack has three coils , each coil is responsible for two cylinders , the end coil fires plugs 1 and 4 at the same time , center coil fires 2 and 5 at the same time and the coil by the connector fires 6 and 3 at the same time , so 1and 4 can be switched at the coil pack and still work , same goes for 5 and 2 , and 6 and 3 with no ill effects

for spark plugs the cylinders are odd driverside 1-3-5, even pass side 2-4-6
