Alright does anyone else have a problem of the turbo cooking a whole through your hood insulator under the hood? Mine sure did a number on it from the looks of it before I bought it. If so, is there anyway to stop it from doing it? I was considering buying the Turbo Insulator wrap from Summit.com, any advice?

there should be a heat sheild under the hood liner

its basically a piece of sheet metal wraped with heat wrap with a lil z shaped bracket that holds it up that screws to the back of the hood directly across from where the hood light screws on look back there behind the turbo area on your hood for screw holes

make sure you have a hotair hood insulator too.. it has a pad where the turbo is.. 86/87 ones have no extra insulation.

Well on the stock hood insulator( with the Turbo Charged thing written on it) I don't remeber seeing any metal plate anywhere and I don't remeber seeing any extra padding, just a nice crisp whole burning through:(

If nothing else, you can have one made at a local metal shop, then have it engraved, or even better get with Buick from Hell. This could be a whole new product for him to manufacture and sell. Preferably in a thick aluminum to cut down on heat transfer to the hood. This would cut down on paint checking. BY the Way BFH if you are out there, remember me when I order one...discount for the ingenuity. ;)

Also be sure that its the heat from the turbo and not a hole in your up pipe. My up pipe had a very small hole in it and in no time ate through the insulator and cooked the paint on the hood.

You got it national! :)

Speaking of up-pipes: Does yours still have the mesh heat shield covering on it? I repaired a hole in my up-pipe years ago, which meant the mesh went in the trash...VERY shortly thereafter, my hood insulation burned up!

Oh, and by the way, the local speed shop does carry it, and I they mail order too. http://www.laneautomotive.com

Note: they are not very GN knowledgable, but they have great prices, inventory and staff. It's really cool to have a summit-like store just 11 miles away. It's hard not to pull in on my way home from work (I pass it every day), and sometimes my car pulls in by itself, it must have a mind of it's own:D

Hey BFH, how about doing a little research on this, I am just finishing up a severely pricey paint job/resto, and want all the protection I can get. Something in aluminum, with the turbo six logo engraved maybe, you could have it attach to the inner hood supports with either rivets or screws. This way, it would not damage the outward appearance of the hood, and if you wanted to return to all-stock insulator, it would cover the holes. If the price is right, I'm in.

hey! I just checked mine out, it would be a relatively easy job to make a nice aluminum insulator! I noticed the original plate is only about 8 x 9 inches or so, and it fits into an indentation in the hood pad. BUT, the indentation is substantially larger than the plate! I could make one large enough to cover the entire indentation! What I would worry about, is the mounting. The original is held on with 2 small sheet metal screws, and I don't know if they would hold up a very much larger plate! If I make the plate out of .030" thick anodized aluminum, it shouldn't really weigh much more than the original, so it might be okay! Also, it appears there's plenty of room to drill an extra hole or two for extra screws! I need to experiment!

Also, on the engraving, I would suggest either the "T-Type" lettering or the GN logo, simply because the insulator already has a jumbo power 6 on it!

AND--can anyone tell me if the IC cars have a similar plate up front?

I think you have a stock 86/87 pad then...

Hey BFH

I'm also in for that product. I have to put something there as the previous owner has burnt and removed the original one ! My car gets back from the shop and thats the first priority before it gets driven...let me know...I also have some other interior items I need to get from you.

Sign me up.

Below is a pic of my burnt-up hood pad! There's an arrow pointing to the metal heat shield, tain't very big! You can see the 2 screws that hold it on. I've also outlined the "indented" part of the pad...I plan to have the plate fit inside that indent! Like I mentioned before, I'm just hoping the original screws will hold it in place!

I'd be extremly interested in this but I am guessing the guy the owner I bought mine from had an 87 insulator pad becuase I don't remeber it having an indent. I was going to order a new pad from jaxseatcover.com but I don't think they come with an ident.

While we're on this subject, how many other people have the "problem" of the turbo resting against the heat plate on the hood under acceleration and amplifying the noise of the turbo? Is this just mine, or do all hotair cars sound that way when accelerating? Maybe just loose motor or tranny mounts, as it won't do it when it's cold, but let me know if you've had this experience, and what to do to fix it.
