I have two questions about transmission fluid that may have been covered, but I find this site to be harder to get through without ads
popping up everywhere and quite honestly getting in the way of searches, browsing, looking for answers so please bare with me.

My questions are
1) I have a 86 grand national with a leaking transmission pan gasket.
I am going to have it replaced, but I noticed on the dipstick it calls for DEXRON 2
Apparently that hasn't been made for quite a few years, like 20 or so, and everything I find said the latest version is DEXRON 6, which apparently is
backward compatible with all previous versions of DEXRON ?
I have no idea of what is currently in the car, but guessing it is some version of DEXRON.

2) When I have the transmission gasket replaced, my understanding is that it will lose about 4-5 quarts of fluid.
I have had a few opinions at that point of
a) flushing and replacing all of the fluid, or
b) simply just top it back off with the latest version of DEXRON 6.
Some people feel like a full flush could possibly loosen up some debris and clog some of the components of the transmission and others think that should not be an
issue.

Anyone have any thoughts and advice with what they have done with their cars in the past ?

PS The car has approximately 62,000 miles on the odometer, and as I have mentioned above I am not sure of what version of transmission fluid is currently in the car.

Thanks for any advice and or thoughts.

Ill mention it to the mechanics when they get to it and see what they think.

Dexron 6 is backward compatible. Unless you're being abusive, any Dexron 6 compatible fluid is going to be fine.

a) flushing and replacing all of the fluid, or
b) simply just top it back off with the latest version of DEXRON 6.

You're dropping the pan, that means you're going to change the filter. That's going to catch the crunk. If you have access to a flushing machine, go ahead. But not flushing it won't hurt anything unless they drop that pan and find out it's full of junk. If it were me, I'd top it off with a new gasket, run it until the next oil change, then pump out what I could through the dipstick tube and top it off again with fresh fluid.

I use the Red Valvoline synthetic Dex6 mine shifts and run fine.5 to 6qts about right. I put a new filter in mine.
